Just curious how many people are settling for lower wages given the current economic climate.
Would you ever take a job that paid less than your previous one?

yes, esp. if it has something to do with selling ice cream from a cart in the summer in midtown right when all the hotties get off work.
- I wonder if I could set up and charge for a Wet T-shirt cart??!!!robotron3k

If I did it (I'm un/self-employed) I would ask for some sort of contingency that if things recover/stock prices go back up/profits go back up my pay for be automatically returned to its previous amount (or even a raise). It can't hurt to ask. If they say no or won't negotiate then you have to decide what it's worth to you.

actually in the last 5 job interviews ive gone to the salary being offered was less that half of my previous salary and that these companies are even willing to offer the gig to me in the understanding that once i find another gig for higher im out... and the reality of that is they are scarred to offer work out to senior level people as a higher salary is attached to it but also they are offeringthe work as a triple tier development job that really is more hat than one and is equal to a senior level position with slight changes to the job duties...
to them they take away travel and claim since there is none the job level is less and therefore the salary is less no matter the level of experience.
its a lose lose situation for both parties.
- i nailed the gig e...robotron3k

I would ask to have my hours reduced. I would take a huge cut in pay to move back to Thailand.

i think the general decline in freelance projects is equivalent to lesser pay, i've spent most of my day tracking down monies owed, even new projects get put on hold from agencies i've worked with for years, clients are clients no matter who is talking to them
(i'm thinking it's job time on the west coast)

the funny thing is i am seeing a rise in larger salaries than ever b4...
this is a new thing in the last 2 weeks... mostly looking for senior level managements or VP level Directors... but its all the same...there is work out there its just the markets are now flooded with over qualified workers all going for the same jobs...i see it turning and the economy is changing as well... or is this just my wishful thinking??

Okay let me answer your question for real...
I took a pay cut from my last job before the whole economy downturn. I made the decision for a few reasons...one was to move to a different state. And the other reason was because I hated my job (0 design, more interface stuff) and knew I would like the new position (my current job).
The job I am in now is about 100 times better than my last. Where it was hard to take a significant pay cut, happiness and general well-being cannot be replaced with compensation. Not sure I would take a pay cut just because the economy is in it's current state, but I would for reasons like those listed above. I think lots of places are trying to capitalize on the "hurting economy" and get away with paying people shit. I would say set a limit and don't take anything below that....but be willing to make a bit less than your ideal if you think you would really love the job.

For me, stress level and level of random insanity is more important than pay. Ironically, the jobs I had in the past that paid more gave less stress and random insanity, probably because they respected a person they paid more....
My current freelance gigs are often a pricing game, and a waiting game, and a "we're not sure about the budget" game... and lots of meetings... Strangely, the reduced budgets wouldn't be bad if they didn't also have such indecision, resulting in MORE pitch meetings at the same time as the reduced budgets, thus resulting in about $500-$1000 worth of time being spent convincing the client to actually do the job, before actually getting started....

We are not getting a bonus this year. The thing is we are doing no less work than last year (opportunist directors).

all you agency/fulltime people are feeling it for sure. it's the year of freelance!
- ukit0
So freelance is good/ lucrative?
- akrokdesign0
i don't think it is. clients spend less. so at the end, your getting less too.
- akrokdesign0
oh well, i freelance mainly with other agencies so, it similar to full-time:rs.

Won't be lowering rates, but will not be raising them in the fall like I do each year. I'll make sure to let clients know that I have frozen the rates due to the economy and that I am sensitive to the situation.
In Canada it hasn't been as bad as some parts. Our banks are stable and here (Calgary) we have the oil industry. Things are tough but not dire. Hopefully, I won't have to see a time that I do have to lower rates.
Are they still saying another year or so before the slow up swing may begin?
