a family friend showed me this website that they are in the process of having built by a local web firm.
i immediately asked what they were being charged for the site... they have already paid half up front, $3,000usd.
Me being a flash devigner i was flabbergasted that someone could charge 6grand for using a template in html site.
I have never used templates other then the occasional flash element to view some code then build a custom version. so i wouldnt feel right charging what i consider to be a premium price for such little apparent work.
im looking for reasons that a 62yr old business owner that doesnt know any of the industry buzzwords or ongoings can tell her current developers that this site just "isnt going to cut it".
i spent an hour in photoshop mocking up a flash layout that could just as easily be done by a CSS/Javascript pro and they were floored at the possibilities in interaction/functionality. now i am just trying to help them get out of their outrageously vague contract so that i can help them with a site that looks like it was done since 200. any help would be appreciated.
if you have read this far without posting a comment i will be very suprised.....

There's an 'Order Products' section that's not currently working. Is there going to be an eCommerce setup as part of the fee?

^^ I was in the midst of typing something along those lines, v3.
I mean, really... who's to say what's too much? If client X is willing to pay 10k for that site and doesn't bother getting competitive quotes... you have to scratch your head a bit.I know that doesn't make it right, but it's not the designer's fault the client is willing to pay what he's charging for it.

find the template and then say the work was not custom so maybe breach of contract ?

Shouldn't we all be trying to push rates up, not down?
In that spirit, I say "Fuck yea, it's worth 6k! He should have charged 60!"

wait, whoa, hold on a sec...
have you seen their prices?

*Awaits the inevitable "I was mocking up a site for a client, including kowtowing to their insane shopping cart requirements, fielding panicked phone calls everyday from this nuts woman Jean, and was doing it for only $6,000. And then suddenly Jean has a "nephew" who could do the "whole thing in Flash" for $500" and now wants to renege on the contract" post.
