thanks to the nice folks who tried to help me with this, but it's just not working! i used http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/ to check out my site in pre-IE6 browsers and the transparency just isn't working!
here is the site in question:
http://leftwave.com/indevelopmen…i used the bgsleight.js hack here:
http://allinthehead.com/retro/28…what am i doing wrong?

<--- wonders if michael jackson were alive if someone would have an answer to this question?

I think you lost a lot of people using the words "pre-IE6" to be honest.

LOL... what's a better way of saying i want to be a responsible designer and make my stuff look decent in old browsers?

use the Jquery PNG fix.

Seriously, unless there's an absolutely critical need to test in pre-IE6 browsers like your web stats indicate a reasonable number of users still on that browser then you're wasting a lot of time and effort supporting something that's very old and not supported even by the company who made it.
As for transparencies, I usually use a png fix script from here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bob… which is alright but it doesn't support transparencies as css backgroudns because you need to insert the png into your html and specify a width and a height.
Not sure about whatever script you've used but this may a reason to look into.
- agreed, but for this particular site i need to support them :(leftwave

Give this a whirl: http://www.dillerdesign.com/expe…
Or use an IE6 conditional stylesheet that replaces your pngs with gifs.
Or 8-bit pngs with alpha transparency (which you can export from Fireworks but not photshop).
Hope that helps.

am i safe to conclude that browser screenshot testers don't work with these PNG hacks? i've tried ALL of the ones listed on this page and none of the IE6 or IE5.5 screenshots show transparancies. does anyone have one of these lame browsers installed that they can test this on directly?
- top and bottom appear to work. tiling stuff in #content does not.
just use gifs for ie6monNom

i give up!! i just tried this:
http://www.dillerdesign.com/expe…on this:
http://leftwave.com/indevelopmen…and the transparency finally WORKS, but the layout is all whacked out!
is there really no way to fix the PNGs while keeping a layout intact?!?

Try this if you're on Win XP http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE…

One this you may wish to consider is loading a seperate CSS file with IE6 specific definitions - that is to say JPGs instead of pngs
<!--[if lt IE 7 ]>
<link href="iecss.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<![endif]-->

@LeftWave - Are you on, or have available a PC? If so, install the multiple IE's workaround rather than using the screenshot sites to see how thngs render in old versions of IE.

google for 'belatedpng'.. but tbh - I'd just serve up non-trans pngs using conditional comments for IE6.
