there is an idiot here who keeps giving me shit on my work when his looks like a first year design student slapped his together in microsoft paint. it's ok though, i know he has nothing else in his miserable life to entertain him so he's gotta keep himself busy somehow.
- have you ever considered he is better than you, despite not knowing how to make pretty pictures?Pupsipu
- that thought has never crossed my mind, as he is in fact not better than me. his work blows.********
- Who ist?Nairn
- so his work blows, therefore he can't be better than you? I mean, overall. That would be wild.Pupsipu
- he obviously has better social skills, clients care more about thosePupsipu
- and this is your work right http://www.zazzle.co… ?Pupsipu

if you don't want people talking shit about your work on qbn.
there are 2 solution to it.
1. don't post it.
2. do a damn good job designing it.- 3. Don't talk shit about other people's work.
4. Don't be an asshole to someone asking for a critiquemonospaced - someone asking for a critique (while not showing your own work)monospaced
- I said 2 !!!pango
- 3. Don't talk shit about other people's work.
- uncle_helv0
It's all part of the process I suppose, hen I critique work I only say what I mean, but mean what I say. But I would agree with pango!

someone should twitter this...

i've never seen any artsy fartsy bullshit in my life that deserved a serious critique. Serious critiques are for crazy people that live in their own little world and judge everyone around them by how pretty their pictures are.
- So...you don't have a real design job, is that what you're saying?monospaced
- lol********
- Seriously, it's these kind of comments that go under the category of "asking for a bashing."monospaced
- what are you gonna bash me with? Pictures prettier than mine?Pupsipu
- no...of course not...but you made a generalization that is both naive and inflammatorymonospaced
- feel free to show how it is naive or a generalization using words that form full sentences then long paragraphs.Pupsipu
- and fit them into this little boxPupsipu
- I'm not crazy and I don't live in my own little world judging everyone around me based on how pretty their pictures are...I'm paid to.monospaced
- ...pictures are. I'm just my job.monospaced

If you decide to dedicate your life to producing work of quality, it's very useful to be told what's shit about your work.
I've found that it's rare that people feel able to give an honest appraisal of what is truly shit, because people rarely want to cause any upset. Honest criticism is valuable.
Which is what's good about QBN.

The only time I've trashed on anyone's work is when I knew I was better than them...
... which is probably why I've never trashed on anyone's work. :)
- epikore0
I have a pretty good eye, so if I say your work is shit you need to change careers and slit your wrist.
- ********0
Because honesty hurts. Everyone has a different eye. Its better to have negative comments and improve from it.

I learned the answer to this years ago. Digital designers are now a dime a dozen. It used to be something special 10 years ago. Now everyone seems to be doing it, so its just our nature to trash everyone.
- And print designers still cant get a site up to get trashed.********
- Yeah if you're half-retarted I might believe that. Anyone can get a site up on their own. My parents did it.CygnusZero4
- Print designers can spell though.MrT
- I'm a print designer and I put a site up. It doesn't work with IE.monospaced
- And print designers still cant get a site up to get trashed.
- bump790
Print designers can get a site up. That is a sad excuse.
I have to agree with some of the earlier comments on here about the bashing. There are "fail" 'tudes, and OPINIONS given before critiques are even asked for. It's as though everyone here thinks they are the next Rand, Bodini, Glaser, Carson and Brody. We can't all be perfect. There are some amazing critiques, but I have only read a handful of useful directions.
I think the main idea in asking for a critique is that you are able to get a positive influence that takes your direction to the next level. I think some of you lose track of that idea in your sea of ego's, and end up deterring as well as discourage students like me to even show my work on here.
I'm just sayin'.

pupsipu offers an interesting stance in which he states that "ones own work need not be good to be able to give critique"of course i don't agree with it. good work shows competence.
if anyone's comments/critiques are to be regarded with the same weight, it's like saying that a news report from the 'Weekly World News' has as much credibility as one from the BBC.

I agree with the stance that "ones own work need not be good to be able to give critique".
For example, think about character animation - we can all critique it because our individual life-experience enables us to appreciate what can pass as a realistic or interesting portrayal of a character. We can say what meets the grade and what doesn't - but we don't need to know how animate ourselves.
To a certain extent the same goes with design - we are all consumers of design. We're bombarded with it enough on a daily basis to (in theory) be able to make an informed choice regarding it's quality.
The main problem / difficult in creating a balanced critique comes when we have to pass judgement on our own work.. objectivity is very difficult - which is why I would state that we need the opinion of others.
Good work shows that a person has mastered a medium and understands it fully - but you don't _need_ to have produced good work to be able to offer a useful opinion. To say otherwise actually is elitist - because in effect, you're placing an artificial limit or bar between the creator and consumer.
- would you critique an engineer or a surgeon?... or does this only happen in the art world?lambsy
- the limit is far from artificial, an untrained eye knows only what it wants, not what is best.NONEIS
- while we are skillful, designers are not of their caliber nor responsibility. no undo or revisions in their job typicallyversion3
