I agree with the stance that "ones own work need not be good to be able to give critique".

For example, think about character animation - we can all critique it because our individual life-experience enables us to appreciate what can pass as a realistic or interesting portrayal of a character. We can say what meets the grade and what doesn't - but we don't need to know how animate ourselves.

To a certain extent the same goes with design - we are all consumers of design. We're bombarded with it enough on a daily basis to (in theory) be able to make an informed choice regarding it's quality.

The main problem / difficult in creating a balanced critique comes when we have to pass judgement on our own work.. objectivity is very difficult - which is why I would state that we need the opinion of others.

Good work shows that a person has mastered a medium and understands it fully - but you don't _need_ to have produced good work to be able to offer a useful opinion. To say otherwise actually is elitist - because in effect, you're placing an artificial limit or bar between the creator and consumer.

    • would you critique an engineer or a surgeon?... or does this only happen in the art world?lambsy
    • the limit is far from artificial, an untrained eye knows only what it wants, not what is best.NONEIS
    • while we are skillful, designers are not of their caliber nor responsibility. no undo or revisions in their job typicallyversion3
