how do you submit yours?
On a separate attachment, on the side of your cover & resume?
Or at the end of your cover..."As requested, my salary history is..."
blah.thanks
- airey0
why the fuck and who the fuck would you submit that to?
- jamble0
I don't. I'm not really clear on why anyone should know this information other than me.
- airey0
yeah, i'd be very wary of anywhere that asked. if pushed i'd make it up, obviously higher.

why would you submit your salary history?
- cause some companies ask for it?!pepite
- Most companies do ask for it, but you shouldn't reveal all your cards right away
acrossthesea - right, but if you dont submit the requested doc...then what...im out?...mmmmmpepite
- Nah, if they like your work you'll get the interview.acrossthesea
- Don't discuss money until you've had a chance to size the company up and then price yourself accordingly.acrossthesea

stupid.
- agree....but again...I need a new job....pepite
- Then start out way back to when you mowed lawns for $5 bucks on up to where you're at now. And add a few grand. Good luck!Brian_Piper

I've never been asked for a salary history, and I'd find it insulting if I did.
Either you are worth something or you aren't. Whether you get paid that is something else entirely.
- Brian_Piper0
Yeah, I've only been asked what I made at my most recent and/or prior position. They shouldn't need to know other than that. Where are you trying to get work from? A design studio? In-house? Agency?
Curious 'cause that's fucked-up and doesn't even seem legal.- hummm...inhouse.
everyone seems to say no no...thanks for sharingpepite
- hummm...inhouse.

I have been asked to supply my current salary in job applications on many occasions but never do... still always get invited to interview though.
Personally I think they are often just trying their luck but don't expect everyone to give it. Suppose you can look at it though that if you put what you are after then at least you don't waste each others time if they aren't looking to pay that much.
- BuddhaHat0
Being asked what you think you're worth is one thing, and is your opportunity to go for a salary higher than you were expecting. Being asked what you previously earnt is just setting you up to be shafted. Tell them you'll give them the figure after you get the job.

so, my question is, even if they say it is required (like "only resumes with salary histories will be considered"), do you not submit it? ... and if you do not, have you ever heard back, gotten an interview, etc?
personally, i think its interesting why people would ask, and I tend not to apply to positions with such questions... but lately, i think its cropping up more and more... as, i guess a way to keep costs down? i dunno.
- in an attempt to keep costs down simply by asking.refunktion
- I feel when this question is asked they often aren't looking to pay the industry standard and want someone cheap.fodcj
- fodcj, yeah... i agree, its just a sketchy method in general.refunktion
- BuddhaHat0
No, you don't submit it. I believe, and I think others will agree, that asking this question is unethical. There's a chance they're asking to decide from your first interview if it's worth bringing you back for a 2nd ('cos you might just be way too expensive), but I don't believe that for a second.
Unless you've been headhunted and they're asking you to name your price, the salary negotiation starts with the employer, not you.
Here's an analogy; you're playing a game of poker with someone, and you've been dealt a hand. If the person on the other side of the table asked you what your last 3 hands were, would you tell them? No, you wouldn't, because it would allow them to size you up and fuck you over.
- refunktion0
That makes a lot of sense. good thing i have not said much in the past.... i do like fodcj question about in an interview though... how would you phrase an answer for that question in person?
- BuddhaHat0
To repeat what I put in the bubble:
'I'm sorry, but I don't feel comfortable answering this question at this stage of the interview process, as I feel it may put me at a disadvantage when we discuss remuneration for my position. If you'd care to elaborate on why you feel it necessary to ask this question, I'd be happy to answer the question if I feel the reasoning is logical and adequate.'
In a nutshell, find the politest way your personal communication style permits to say 'get fucked, i'm not giving that up until you make me an offer'.

My girlfriend was making fun of me because I had a salary history on my CV. She wondered why it was there. I told her that I didn't know, but that it showed a slow and steady trend of quitting jobs and earning more money at the next one. I'm not in the point in my career where I'm making too much or too little to be embarrassed.
