So, apparently, SNW is actual Star Trek? Like, slow paced stories about ethical conundrums and intergalactic diplomacy?
And not utter garbage?
- Continuity1
So I don't want to jinx it ... but this show is really going from strength to strength, isn't it? At last, some proper Trek.
And Anson Mount can do no wrong.
- Strange New Worlds, naturally.Continuity
- It took them like 5 different trek series before they finally gave us the one we actually wantedscarabin
- Pretty much, yup.Continuity
- Continuity0
That last episode of SNW watch very watchable, BUT ...
We need to stop re-hashing ideas, here. That episode was besically a remix of Wrath of Khan.
- where watch = was, of course.Continuity
- Also, maybe a few too many B, C, and D plots.Continuity
- huh?grafician
- I don't know about a remix, but it was supposed to evoke connections to Khan. The security officer is Khan's descendant.ETM
- The whole ship to ship battle sequence really was like the Enterprise v Reliant nebula battle in TWOK, though.Continuity

60s Nonsense Tier: TOS
Melodramatic Tier: DIS, PIC
Ruined By The Intro Tier: ENT
Competence Porn Tier: TNG, D29, VOY, SNW (provisional)
- PIC is by far the worst of them all (except for DIS S01).
I'd rather binge-watch ENT, and it pains me to say that.Continuity - but there's something magical in the 60's nonsense of TOS, just the purity in storytelling like the twilight zone, low budget but high concept_niko
- Some of the episodes in the first season of TOS were excellent. 'Balance of Terror', for example.Continuity
- also TOS was fun, didn't take itself too seriously and it made it so enjoyable and watchable, had a certain charm, not just from Kirk but the entire crew_niko
- I want Star Trek to take itself seriously. It's Sci Fi and it's a serious genre. I don't want to see Kirk spasming on the floor and spasming in his dialogue.CyBrainX
- But I agree the first two seasons had some of the best episodes of any of the shows. City on the Edge of Forever, Amok Time, Balance of Terror, many others.CyBrainX
- PIC is by far the worst of them all (except for DIS S01).

The writing on Picard was fucking awful.
Strange New Worlds is the first (live action) trek series since Voyager worth the time, but we'll see how it goes after the show bible ends in a few episodes and they start winging it.
- show bible?
Why does everyone hate Picard that much? Can't Star Trek be new? I'm sure everyone will hate Strange New Worlds in about a month too.CyBrainX - Voyager's first three years before 7 of 9 was the worst Star Trek television aside from the original series season 3 but was much better after that.CyBrainX
- SNW is nice, its more episodic. I'm tired of those bulky arcstank02
- A show bible usually lays out the first half of the first season. After that new writers and new storylines can be introduced and the vision/direction lost.i_monk
- Can I apply for that job?CyBrainX
- Trek can be new but it has to be well-written. Picard was sub-Xena Warrior Princess.i_monk
- And I'll say it: Brent Spiner and Wil Wheaton are terrible actors.i_monk
- The thing that use to bother me about the episodic shows is that they would churn out so many filler episodes in the holodeck, and horse riding dwarves.CyBrainX
- It wasn't the episodic storytelling, it was the length of the seasons needed for syndication. That's how you get filler.i_monk
- Re: Wil Wheaton. Apparently h thought this was necessary, At his age:Nairn
- https://wilwheaton.n…Nairn
- Oh, come on. Picard was a self-indulgent shit sandwich. I didn't bother watching the season finale.Continuity
- ^^The captions are the best.i_monk
- Picard Season 1 was tolerable. But season 2 is a slog. Boring, and borderline ridiculous at times.ETM
- Strange New Worlds is pretty tight - nods to the 60's show are everywhere, from the funky coloured console buttons to the sound design.face_melter
- They even have the pulsing 'alert' graphic used in the films. Hugely enjoyable show so far.face_melter
- People who like non-nineties Trek are new to Trek. Non-nineties Trek is missing the point of Trek.jagara
- Never really watched TOS, I admit.jagara
- @face Oh! Oh! Time for me to be a Trek pedant! That alert graphic was never in TOS. It was first seen in The Motion Picture (1979).Continuity
- Now I hate myself for even saying it.Continuity
- Also ... I just re-read your comment. You said films, and not TOS.
I hate myself twice.
Carry on.Continuity
- show bible?

Discovery. Picard. All garbage. Trek sucks these days. Depressing.
- 2 words.
SUB ROSAtank02 - Huh?jagara
- Just watch all of TNG again for the 73rd time. Problem solvednb
- If you don't know that episode, you are no TNG fan.tank02
- THERE! ARE! FOUR! LIGHTS!jagara
- Sub Rosa was easily one of the worst episodes. Discovery and Picard are probably the best shows since The Next Generation.CyBrainX
- The first three episodes of Brave New Worlds were very impressive too.CyBrainX
- Also, this video is one of the Short Treks. Many of those are throwaways. It's not a Discovery episode.CyBrainX
- @nb I rarely remember the episode titles, just the stories :)jagara
- Is this the episode about a crew member who masturbated to VR porndrgs
- @Strange New Worlds is fine, It's at least close to the actual spirit of Trek. STD & STP sucks bum-bum.jagara

in 5 days, 20 hours- I'm as dedicated a fan as there is but I'm not going near this one. I'm not into the cartoons and children's entertainment.CyBrainX
- lol, i got here to post this because of you :D
i don't like these either, they are truly not for our generation :)sted - I feel the same way about Star Wars but I expected that much collateral damage from the Disney deal.CyBrainX

- William Shatner's not going to Space.Nairn
- @nairn - He already went, and landed back on Earth https://t.co/qCcQeam…PioneerDJ303
- William Shatner lands back on Earth as the oldest person to ever go to space.PioneerDJ303
- He still didn't go to space.Nairn
- according to the news he didPioneerDJ303
- That's not space, that's very high orbit of Earthgrafician
- Blue Origin defines the beginning of space as the Kármán line at an altitude of 62 mi.PioneerDJ303
- Oh you crazy kids and your semanticsGuyFawkes
- The news is misled and misleading. They didn't orbit at all, high or otherwise. They just went quite high, then straight back down again. Not space.Nairn
- The launch looks suspiciously computer generated.palimpsest
- It's funny to see the comparative media exposure of these bullshit funfair rides compared to the relatively-unreporte... SpaceX 3 day multi orbit jauntNairn
- THAT was Space. This shit's... well, not, copy-pasting the correct diacritics in Kármán or otherwise.Nairn
- I see this thing about 5 times a day.CyBrainX
- So, what qualifies as space, exactly, if it isn't merely leaving the atmosphere? Even low orbit jaunts are not much beyond that.monospaced
- Also, Shatner wasn't even in this fucking movie franchise. ;)monospaced
- Where does the atmosphere end, exactly? The Karman line is simply a definition of where it might, but it's not an absolute.
A neat 100km is ...well, a bit neat.Nairn - "Going to space" should involve enough energy to free a body from the majority of Earth's gravitational pull beyond a mere ballistic trajectory.Nairn
- Sure, it's semantics, but these piffling pieces of shit from Bezos and Virgin are mere stunts. They're not in any way related to actual progress in Space.Nairn
- Glorified carnival rides.palimpsest
- So, is the moon free from the majority of Earth's gravitational pull? Not being a smartass, but really, where is this point and how do we determine it?monospaced
- I agree they are mere stunts, but I do see these as significant to the commercialization of space travel.monospaced
- Even if showing we can get to that point. Like a step 1, step 2 kind of thing. Launch, low orbit stunt, then prolonged orbit, and then travel someday.monospaced
- Ok, I misspoke, the point of orbiting is to get beyond the point you're going to fall straight back down again, as the moon doesn't.Nairn
- For someone that grew up sneaking out of bed to watch Star Trek with Capt Kirk, he went to space. Closer than you naysayers have been.lemmy_k

Anyone been watching Lower Decks?
I have to admit, it's mildly entertaining, although all the constant name-dropping and call-backs gets a bit irritating after a while.
Nonetheless, I'm amused.
- I love it. Wish there were more. I’ve come to realize i only like trek for its campiness and humor, which is why i dislike discovery so muchscarabin
- (And love TOS, TNG so much)scarabin
- I loathe Discovery, and I'm really not overly fond of Picard, either. Tedious, dour GoT-wannabe.Continuity
- Between Lower Decks and The Boys, though, Jack Quaid is getting a lot of work.Continuity
