- William Shatner's not going to Space.Nairn
- @nairn - He already went, and landed back on Earth https://t.co/qCcQeam…PioneerDJ303
- William Shatner lands back on Earth as the oldest person to ever go to space.PioneerDJ303
- He still didn't go to space.Nairn
- according to the news he didPioneerDJ303
- That's not space, that's very high orbit of Earthgrafician
- Blue Origin defines the beginning of space as the Kármán line at an altitude of 62 mi.PioneerDJ303
- Oh you crazy kids and your semanticsGuyFawkes
- The news is misled and misleading. They didn't orbit at all, high or otherwise. They just went quite high, then straight back down again. Not space.Nairn
- The launch looks suspiciously computer generated.palimpsest
- It's funny to see the comparative media exposure of these bullshit funfair rides compared to the relatively-unreporte... SpaceX 3 day multi orbit jauntNairn
- THAT was Space. This shit's... well, not, copy-pasting the correct diacritics in Kármán or otherwise.Nairn
- I see this thing about 5 times a day.CyBrainX
- So, what qualifies as space, exactly, if it isn't merely leaving the atmosphere? Even low orbit jaunts are not much beyond that.monospaced
- Also, Shatner wasn't even in this fucking movie franchise. ;)monospaced
- Where does the atmosphere end, exactly? The Karman line is simply a definition of where it might, but it's not an absolute.
A neat 100km is ...well, a bit neat.Nairn - "Going to space" should involve enough energy to free a body from the majority of Earth's gravitational pull beyond a mere ballistic trajectory.Nairn
- Sure, it's semantics, but these piffling pieces of shit from Bezos and Virgin are mere stunts. They're not in any way related to actual progress in Space.Nairn
- Glorified carnival rides.palimpsest
- So, is the moon free from the majority of Earth's gravitational pull? Not being a smartass, but really, where is this point and how do we determine it?monospaced
- I agree they are mere stunts, but I do see these as significant to the commercialization of space travel.monospaced
- Even if showing we can get to that point. Like a step 1, step 2 kind of thing. Launch, low orbit stunt, then prolonged orbit, and then travel someday.monospaced
- Ok, I misspoke, the point of orbiting is to get beyond the point you're going to fall straight back down again, as the moon doesn't.Nairn
- For someone that grew up sneaking out of bed to watch Star Trek with Capt Kirk, he went to space. Closer than you naysayers have been.lemmy_k
- Sulu wants a word with you.

I thought we had a generic star wars thread, but we only have ones dedicated to individual movies. So i guess here will have to do
}:)
"The Millennium Falcon is the most famous starship of all time, and a bonafide cultural icon in its own right.
But it underwent a long and arduous conceptual phase before that final iconic shape emerged"

The writing on Picard was fucking awful.
Strange New Worlds is the first (live action) trek series since Voyager worth the time, but we'll see how it goes after the show bible ends in a few episodes and they start winging it.
- show bible?
Why does everyone hate Picard that much? Can't Star Trek be new? I'm sure everyone will hate Strange New Worlds in about a month too.CyBrainX - Voyager's first three years before 7 of 9 was the worst Star Trek television aside from the original series season 3 but was much better after that.CyBrainX
- SNW is nice, its more episodic. I'm tired of those bulky arcstank02
- A show bible usually lays out the first half of the first season. After that new writers and new storylines can be introduced and the vision/direction lost.i_monk
- Can I apply for that job?CyBrainX
- Trek can be new but it has to be well-written. Picard was sub-Xena Warrior Princess.i_monk
- And I'll say it: Brent Spiner and Wil Wheaton are terrible actors.i_monk
- The thing that use to bother me about the episodic shows is that they would churn out so many filler episodes in the holodeck, and horse riding dwarves.CyBrainX
- It wasn't the episodic storytelling, it was the length of the seasons needed for syndication. That's how you get filler.i_monk
- Re: Wil Wheaton. Apparently h thought this was necessary, At his age:Nairn
- https://wilwheaton.n…Nairn
- Oh, come on. Picard was a self-indulgent shit sandwich. I didn't bother watching the season finale.Continuity
- ^^The captions are the best.i_monk
- Picard Season 1 was tolerable. But season 2 is a slog. Boring, and borderline ridiculous at times.ETM
- Strange New Worlds is pretty tight - nods to the 60's show are everywhere, from the funky coloured console buttons to the sound design.face_melter
- They even have the pulsing 'alert' graphic used in the films. Hugely enjoyable show so far.face_melter
- People who like non-nineties Trek are new to Trek. Non-nineties Trek is missing the point of Trek.jagara
- Never really watched TOS, I admit.jagara
- @face Oh! Oh! Time for me to be a Trek pedant! That alert graphic was never in TOS. It was first seen in The Motion Picture (1979).Continuity
- Now I hate myself for even saying it.Continuity
- Also ... I just re-read your comment. You said films, and not TOS.
I hate myself twice.
Carry on.Continuity
- show bible?
- jagara1
Discovery. Picard. All garbage. Trek sucks these days. Depressing.
- 2 words.
SUB ROSAtank02 - Huh?jagara
- Just watch all of TNG again for the 73rd time. Problem solvednb
- If you don't know that episode, you are no TNG fan.tank02
- THERE! ARE! FOUR! LIGHTS!jagara
- Sub Rosa was easily one of the worst episodes. Discovery and Picard are probably the best shows since The Next Generation.CyBrainX
- The first three episodes of Brave New Worlds were very impressive too.CyBrainX
- Also, this video is one of the Short Treks. Many of those are throwaways. It's not a Discovery episode.CyBrainX
- @nb I rarely remember the episode titles, just the stories :)jagara
- Is this the episode about a crew member who masturbated to VR porndrgs
- @Strange New Worlds is fine, It's at least close to the actual spirit of Trek. STD & STP sucks bum-bum.jagara
- 2 words.

Strange New Worlds episode 3 was amazing. Not only a great story but a lot of very well done fan service.
- I really enjoyed it, and I'm liking the character work they're doing with this show. So, so much better than Discovery.Continuity
- It's funny, though, at the start of it when the time traveller guy came in, my first thought was, 'Aw, no. Not the fucking Mirror Universe again.'Continuity
- Thankfully, it wasn't.Continuity
- I mean, let's not question how they went to Vermont and back with no passports, but all-in-all pretty good.ETM
- I said the same exact thing about the Stupid Universe possibility.CyBrainX
- how much money did Kirk win playing chess? that hotel room was minimum $1000/night_niko

< spoiler >
fuck the borg... BORRRRgINGGGGG...zzzzzzzzzz stupid rehashed shit...
< / spoiler >
- Hailed as the best episode by many critics. but sure go ahead.
My fav is still yesterday's enterprise. But this one is in the top 10tank02 - Eh, also Changeling/Borg team-up.
Right. Whatever.Continuity - Hailed as a shitty episode by pony. <3
Sappy overacting, boring rehashed / mashed-up plots smothered in WONDERFUL nostalgia... it's like wrapping tofu in bacon.PonyBoy - @pony are you still using the vaping mechanism your wife bought you? Curious if you transitioned back to regular burn method since then.hotroddy
- haha... I use both... next episode I will try using just the vaporizer only.PonyBoy
- They could give you City on the Edge of Forever every week and fans would still hate.CyBrainX
- wondering if a vape machine is a good investment for me, although I'm sure ST is better after a black-cloud-inducing toke.hotroddy
- they both hit differently to me, roddy... a quick smoke puff is direct and instantly soothing... vaping has weight to it - the high is sometimes heavy / sleepyPonyBoy
- Hailed as the best episode by many critics. but sure go ahead.

Don't know what you cunts are on about, about Picard
I just spammed S01 and I thought it was a great trip. My only probem was casting Jordan Peterson for Bruce Maddox's role.
- Jordan Peterson plays in Star Trek?drgs
- Not literally, no.Nairn
- Well, obviously you have a different opinion of the show than I do. And that's OK. All the same, I'm happy you're enjoying it!Continuity
- I mean, fuckit 'yes'? if it encourages young directionless white males to engage with star trek rather than some overwrought culture war interpretation.Nairn
- i dunno, i'm old and i in no way make the rules nor ever did. lol.
lol.Nairn - I felt S1 was OK. S2 was more entertaining, especially the first Nazi-esque federation bit, but still OK. S3 is by far the most fan service/entertaining of all.evilpeacock
- huh, my Picard-pushing chum suggested I could miss S02 entirely. You make it sound better than he did :)Nairn
- I liked season 2 but most people hated it intensely.CyBrainX
- @evilpeacock Star Trek has had Nazis in Star Trek at least twice. Patterns of Force in the original series and there were holodeck Nazis in Voyager.CyBrainX
- Oh yes, the holodeck Nazis. The Hirogens would actually be a cool race to bring back.Continuity
- I can see why S2 got panned, it's split into two parts really, and the 2nd part isn't as good. Not even sure why I didn't hate it myself.evilpeacock
- @CyBrainX Makes sense that the utopian Trek universe occasionally has to re-subdue Nazis.evilpeacock

- < my least favorite episode of all seasonsdopepope
- HA!bulletfactory
- @dp - this isn't the one where he actually gets the flute and tune from, right? 'Cos THAT one is one o fthe Best Ever episodes of all time!Nairn
- When he lives another entire life in the span of a few minutes? Nah, that's a great one. This one Picard falls in love.dopepope
- Hold on - I'm home alone at the moment - I might have to watch that one tonight! Again. Againagainagain..Nairn
- The Inner Light, was when he lives a lifetime in 20 minutes. This time, Picard falls in love. He sends her out on a mission and freaks out worrying. Not great.CyBrainX
- Ooh, I forgot I watched this again last week. Still good, even if it's getting harder to ignore how old shit looks these days. Minds me of Original ST!Nairn
- CyBrainX0
I've been a huge fan of Strange New Worlds since the beginning but this episode (Season 2, Episode 9) was as bad as anything from the franchise since Star Trek 5 in 1989. It was bad enough when Deep Space 9 made entire episodes about the Ferengi but at least they gave us about 25 episodes per season, not 10. Also, this was their third throwaway episode this year.
- The singing one? I turned it off four verses in.i_monk
- I hear episode 8 is amazing though_niko
- It was awful. But I hate most musicals.thumb_screws
- I hate them too. And yes, Episode 8 was fantastic. This show always is, when they try.CyBrainX
- Continuity1
Ooooooookay.
I'm big enough to admit that Picard finale hit me square in the nostalgia feels.- YUP! I really hope a spin-off comes out of this.Akagiyama
- Especially with that end-credit scene.Akagiyama
- I took that end-credit scene and few minutes leading up to it as a spin-off announcement.CyBrainX
- Yup, same.Continuity

in 5 days, 20 hours- I'm as dedicated a fan as there is but I'm not going near this one. I'm not into the cartoons and children's entertainment.CyBrainX
- lol, i got here to post this because of you :D
i don't like these either, they are truly not for our generation :)sted - I feel the same way about Star Wars but I expected that much collateral damage from the Disney deal.CyBrainX
- Star wars: visions s01e02 is the worst thing i’ve ever seenscarabin
- Worse than the Holiday Special?CyBrainX
- It makes the holiday special look like citizen kanescarabin
- PonyBoy0
I fucking LOVE Carol Kane... she’s such an adorable nutbag at any age / taking on any role
- Yup, she was good fun.Continuity
- Agreed. I just hope she doesn't try to organize a Space Schloogel.CyBrainX
- Speaking of Taxi, don't forget Christopher Lloyd proclaimed he was going to save Star Trek on the show, a few years before appearing on Star Trek 3.CyBrainX
- He made a pretty fucking awesome Klingon, too. John Laroquette, maybe not so much. He was pretty forgettable.Continuity
- Loved Lloyd as a Klingon... and yeah, Laroquette was pretty forgettable... but let us not forget James Worthy! https://www.youtube.…PonyBoy
- Haha shit! Yup, he was pretty awesome.
"May I inquire as to your destination?"
"No."Continuity

So, uh ... did anyone actually *ask* for this?
'Rumor: Star Trek: Voyager revival in development'
- It could work despite some weak characters from 20+ years ago. Get Janeway, Seven and the EMH and it's a good start.CyBrainX
- What I never asked for is cartoons.CyBrainX
- ^ They've been doing animated Trek since 1973.ETM
- And it's just as useless as cartoon Spock and hammerhead Chekov replacement.CyBrainX
- We'll let Paramount know that 1 individual does not like their animation. They should stop.ETM
- Personally, I think Lower Decks is some fucking great Trek.Continuity

So, apparently, SNW is actual Star Trek? Like, slow paced stories about ethical conundrums and intergalactic diplomacy?
And not utter garbage?
