- I doubt he'll want to shell out that amount of money on his first guitar.Jnr_Madison
- How'd you go starting out with Ovations generally super-high action?Nathan_Adams
- I learned with a super high action, just a slightly steeper learning curve but rewarding.ismith

It really depends on the school of thought. I have had some say to learn on an acoustic, and others say to go right into learning on the electric. Either way works out in the end.
- Classical guitar never crosses your mind?Corvo2
- those are good too.********

wtf with people recommending against acoustics?
Learning with an acoustic is like learning to drive in a manual car. It'll set the foundations much better, and it's far easier to make the switch later from an acoustic to an electric than the other way around (just like it's easy to jump into an automatic car after learning a manual, than jumping in a manual having only learnt in an automatic).
The acoustic will help build up finger strength better, and you won't be distracted by things like effects, amps, etc.

- I agree with this, how I started.Jnr_Madison

- +10. Too much extra stuff going on with electric. Just get a decent acoustic, and a digital tuner.baseline_shift

No one is recommending against acoustic. One is just saying that classical is better to learn. The purpose of learning guitar might not just going electrical. What you just posted seems like everyone who's trying to learn the guitar will end up in a rock band.
- Bad english, sorry (I learned it on a electrical... AHAHHA.... nevermind)Corvo2

Finger strength? Just get a high action electric and throw 13s on there. Done.
For me, I learned on both at the same time. So I really can't say one way or the other.

Electric or acoustic? Depends on what you're going for and what you're inspired by. If you love Van Halen or Green Day or whatever, just get an electric off the bat, otherwise I think you'll be frustrated with an acoustic after a while, and the most important thing to learning it is staying inspired long enough to have stuff stick. If you're into Neil Young, Who, dylan whatever then go acoustic straight away. Important thing is that picking the thing up has you jazzed, so I say the most important thing is getting whatever instrument can get you as close to whatever inspired you to pick it up...

Do what feels right and don't listen to anyone. Pick a guitar that you think plays well and sounds good. That's all that matters.
What matters is that you don't learn Stairway to Heaven and go back and blast it in Guitar Center.
- Stairway to heaven is a right of passage when learning the guitar.Jnr_Madison
- can you play the solo?whendog
- lol, I only learned the intro.Jnr_Madison
- I don't know any of it... hell, I can't even hear it in my head besides the lyrics to one of the verses...ismith

Maybe we're not talking about the same things. I'm not sure what the word "acoustic" means to you in the US. You seem to be making a distinction just between acoustic and electrical guitars.
But around here an "acoustic" guitar means a folk-guitar (big bodied steel-stringed guitar) whereas a "classical" guitar means a smaller-bodied nylon-stringed guitar.
Anyway, Mr. Atkinson, ask a music professor which sort of guitar one should start with. They should know.

I've played guitar for years and years and years. I have acoustics, electrics, and classical guitars. I can fingerpick, flatpick, play slide, play big knucklebusting jazz chords, I can play Segovia's chromatic slurs, and Giulani's arpeggios. Travis picking? That's for children.
Want to know what I really regret? Not getting into synthesizers sooner.
True story.

Keep it as simple as possible. With electrics, you have to worry about amps and settings, which can be confusing or distracting as a beginner.
Just get a decent acoustic. Get used to the fretboard, and get your strumming hand used to strumming rhythms.
I stress this; get a decent tuner. Tune the guitar every time you play it, to get your ears used to the sounds that SHOULD be coming from your guitar. This and dexterity in your hands are the most important things. fancy amps and distortion come later.
- Download the tuner to your iPhone! It works great.boobs
- Just download iGuitar on your phone. Its way easier than learning the real guitar.baseline_shift

If your learning to play try to find a cheap, decent acoustic. Something you won't mind knockin' around. I started out on a really crappy yamaha acoustic about 13.5 years ago. She had quite a few dings in her before i donated her to a friend. Here's what I'm playing with now.
Ovation Celebrity Deluxe
and
Fender American Stratocaster
