wtf with people recommending against acoustics?
Learning with an acoustic is like learning to drive in a manual car. It'll set the foundations much better, and it's far easier to make the switch later from an acoustic to an electric than the other way around (just like it's easy to jump into an automatic car after learning a manual, than jumping in a manual having only learnt in an automatic).
The acoustic will help build up finger strength better, and you won't be distracted by things like effects, amps, etc.
