Electric or acoustic? Depends on what you're going for and what you're inspired by. If you love Van Halen or Green Day or whatever, just get an electric off the bat, otherwise I think you'll be frustrated with an acoustic after a while, and the most important thing to learning it is staying inspired long enough to have stuff stick. If you're into Neil Young, Who, dylan whatever then go acoustic straight away. Important thing is that picking the thing up has you jazzed, so I say the most important thing is getting whatever instrument can get you as close to whatever inspired you to pick it up...
