more scary!

I had a kidney stone, and my side hurt for a bit, not agony, but not nice. Then I peed out a stone into the toilet, which was a little uncomfortable, but again nothing like these horror stories.
I peed another one a few months ago, and that didn't hurt at all : /

hopefully if I have stones, it will be like yours.

These threads always scare me...
"Men are affected by renal stones more commonly than women. The male-to-female ratio is approximately 3:1. It occurs commonly between 30-50 years of age. It is mostly found in persons whose diet is low in vitamins. Approximately 80-85 per cent of stones pass spontaneously without any mortality. Its recurrence is likely to occur if it is left without treatment."

used to be fatal this you know. could get that bad that the only option (this was before the days of anesthetic), was to cut a hole in you round the scrotum area and reach up into you with instruments to remove the stone. So it was a full bottle of whiskey down the gullet in one or two slugs in the hope you would pass out pre-op. Pretty good chance you'd still die too, even if they got the bugger.
- I wonder how they first found out where it was. I guess experimentation.juhls

I know the chances of men getting kidney stones is fairly high, but I'm glad I'm not the only who's had it fairly bad! I've yet to have an op arranged, so until then its heavy duty painkillers (non-oral) to soothe any pain until it's sorted.
I wish I'd been like a few of you on this thread, passing them without even knowing - you lucky bastards.

I just started taking calcium supplements (can't really drink milk) and so I was searching to see if they could cause kidney stones....apparently they actually help reduce the risk of getting kidney stones which is odd.
So start taking calcium supplements and hopefully you wont have to suffer again!

I had 'em as a junior in high school. TERRRIBLE pain.

I think my experience was not as bad relatively despite the fact I had 2 stones about 1 cm in size each. Both had gone from the kidney to the ureter than stuck right before the bladder. I didn't even know they were there until the ct scan (told to do after I had some discolored urine).
They were too big to pass, so I was put under, they went up, lasered them, and pulled them out. Woke up, then there was pain and percoset. Mostly burning for a few days and I dreaded having to go, but not too bad all things considered. This was all last month.
My question... It goes:
kidney -> ureter -> bladder -> urethra -> outAlong what part do people feel the most pain as the stone(s) is moving along?
- When the stone is in the kidney the pain is dull but pretty painful. When it hits the Ureter and moves down toward the Bladder it starts to get Very painful.Starwell99

My question is.....how does one avoid these mothers?

oooooo - Definitely kidney -to- bladder. Evidently the ureter is much smaller than the urethra, hence why they tend to get stuck there more often.
Atleast this has been the case for me. I've yet to have a CT scan, but the xray showed my bladder to look like a 'bag of marbles', and I haven't passed any since the xray, so I know they're still there...

"Coffee and Tea. Some research as reported a lower risk for stones with tea and both regular and decaffeinated coffee."

The best way to be healthy is eating more Korean food. There's more vegetables, tofu, soy, tea and less red meat.
- I eat KimChee like it's going out of style :)designbot
- Oh don't eat too much. I try to balance it allepikore

"Worst pain I've ever felt in my life."
Hear hear!

sorry that is pretty bad, just go to the doctor they will make sure you are not in any life threatening harm, pretty much give you some pain meds and then send you home to pass it.
my friend gets them about once a year.

So, the saga continues...
Since my first post, over 6 weeks ago, and I'm only now beginning to see the light at the end of the kidney stone tunnel.
In the last 6 weeks, I've been to the Hospital once, and had to have a paramedic called out to treat me (whilst in a motorway service station no less). At no point could either do more than administer pain relief, as I was away from my local hospital and they didn't have my records to perform an op.
I've now had a couple of xrays, and one CT scan. The CT scan revealed an 8 x 8 x 12mm stone sat in my bladder. The doc reckons that this is what's been causing my excruciating pain. In light of this, he's put me down on the 'urgent' list to have an op. The timeframe for this 'urgent' op? anywhere up to 4 weeks!!
So, anytime within the next 4 weeks, I could have another bad episode, which usually entails massive bloating, huge pain in my kidneys (like being kicked repeatedly in the back) and the aforementioned excruciating pain in the bladder. I can't wait.
I never thought that there'd be a time where I'd be really happy for someone (a doctor) to go up my little fella and start poking around... but I really can't wait for this to be over!
I mean, there's no way of passing a stone that big! ouch.
