Personally I think it's pretty stupid of the people in NYC to think something bad was going to happen. Everyone knows that an entire squad of F16s would be scrambled in the event of a potential emergency, not just one.

I saw this happening from Brooklyn. Immediately I thought it was Obama in town. I could tell the plane was Air Force one from a mile away. Obama needs protection, and a few fighter jets behind AF1 seemed plausible at the time.
However, it was flying very low... and I have never seen a 747 maneuver like that...

Seriously, NYC, and to some extent the U.S. has held onto 9/11 pain in such a fashion that it's petrified into a form of indignation and self-righteousness. Yes, a lot of people died, but more people die every day from smoking.
It's the same form of indignation that galvanizes black people into saying "That's our word." when someone drops the N bomb (no one can own a word).
Holding onto pain like that kills you on the inside. It never gets challenged because no one has the gumption to tell someone to get over it, so it festers.
For example, look at the WTC site. It's festering. Those were hard times, but it's time to move on, NYC. That was 8 years ago.
