Having a great convo about this in the office today and thought I'd share with you crazy kids:
Do design awards matter?
One side of the argument says yes because it shows relevancy and outstanding work.
Another says no because clients don't want award-winning agencies, they want agencies who can show ROI and be appropriate for the job.

Awards are only so good in as much as they recognize an aspiration to be innovative. However since many awards are juried by 'pals' and cliques you tend to see the same crap awarded (even if it is a folly).
Brands that are too ROI driven will miss the boat in that humans inherently want to be entertained and inspired- which leads to brand loyalty.
I think a health disregard for awards whilst feeling good for a short while is a good attitude.

they come in handy when looking for new job, though

Design awards are good for studio morale and designers' egos.
But in business terms they don't matter much.
Where I work we enter the 'design effectiveness awards' which measure how successful a design was (increased profits etc). I think clients care about those more. What's the point of doing great creative work for a client if it doesn't do anything for them. After all most design is about selling something or effectively communicating something, if it doesn't do that then it's failed

Sure they matter. They show a competitive edge and are good for marketing purposes (both to say "award winning" and for the 'free' exposure).
I disagree with the premise that they are pointless. Unto themselves, they are just for morale, but win an award with client's work and they'll be even more happy with the design. There is no reason you cannot create award winning work that also is great for your clients.

It is nice to get recognized by your work and they do help to get new projects and jobs, but it's important to stay focus and real to your ideas, even if they are not consider "award winning materials" by judges.

Clients rarely care. TDC here, red dot there, they don't give a shit just like I don't care if they won a minigolf cup last weekend.
Colleagues are usually impressed. Point is, is it worth to impress someone who won't pay you? I don't know.- Fair point but it helps Cadburys sign a 30 million pound deal when a Gorilla gets a black pencilbabaganush

I don't know who to reference for this quote, but:
'Awards are like hemorrhoids; eventually, every arsehole gets one.'

Awards are a nice form of recognition, but shouldn't be the end all, be all. Winning a design industry award is nice, but winning an award for design outside of the design industry is more relevant I think (less insular?).

They do on resumes

it's nothing more than peer recognition which is very useful when getting a job... outside of that... nobody cares.
