Sure they matter. They show a competitive edge and are good for marketing purposes (both to say "award winning" and for the 'free' exposure).
I disagree with the premise that they are pointless. Unto themselves, they are just for morale, but win an award with client's work and they'll be even more happy with the design. There is no reason you cannot create award winning work that also is great for your clients.
