happened here to my boss last week.
Can you plug into an external monitor and check the signal?
He had to send his off.

do you have a 2nd screen? if so plug your mpb into it and check if everything is fine,
backup your work and call a genius to bitch about the lack of quality of macbook's screenI had a similar problem on my pc laptop but I advise you to do what I did, I opened it and verified if the connectors (screen > motherboard) were still in place, I found out that one was slightly off, pushed it in, used some paper scotch and it was as new :)

this might be worth a try.
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.- what grey screen?? I don't get a grey screen.********

I'll give you $100 for it

the real tragedy is that you'll only go and buy another one.
- well, yeah, it's not like a PC is going to be so much better.juhls

Have you got another computer on the network? Can you ping it - or see it via your router?

Warranty?

turn it off, connect it with firewire to another computer, then keep the T key pressed while booting. it will mount on the other computer as an external fw-harddisk. that way you get your files.

Have you checked the blackness isn't because you're now blind in a small part of your eyes? As I understand it from mactards, macs "just work" so your broken one is more likely to be fine and the problem is with your vision.

jamble might be onto something.
It could be one of these "features" I hear so much about.

One of the stronger reset commands i have used in the past to repair white screens was to remove the battery, hold down the power button for at least five seconds, put the battery back in, hold the power down until it beeps, then watch and see if it reboots.
If you get a completely black screen, as in you can't even see the LED backlights around the edges when you turn the lights in the room off, there's a good chance the screen is toast.
