Giving up drinking.

Anyone ever done this? I contemplate this every few months, mostly cause I'm bored of the Scottish drinking philosophy that's been drummed into me over the past 17 years. Don't touch a drop Mon-Thurs, then Friday-Sun I pile copious amounts into my system, stay up late, wake up late, feel like shit and waste all my time off.
I'm not saying I want to give it up all together, I enjoy beer outside as much as the next guy, but I want to stop weekend binge drinking (unless I'm doing something that merits it, like camping, socializing with rednecks, gatecrashing a high school party).
The hardest thing for me is when I'm bored I need to convince myself that alcohol isn't the answer but I have no idea how to do that.
Any tips?

And yes, I ws drinking last night, but no, I'm not hungover right now. Not too much anyway, so this isn't one of these "oh shit, I wish I was dead I feel so awful" trips.

i gave it up for lent...not for religious reasons really...but just because i wanted to do it for myself and that seemed like a good way to go about it
when everyone asks you can say "i gave it up for lent"...and then everyone tries to buy you drinks...more so than they normally would
anyways.. i caved about 4 weeks in. still not bad though...4 weeks with no drinking.
but i have cut back a lot. it used to be that when i would go somewhere i would grab a 12 standardly and maybe a 12 and a 6 depending on the party...sometimes even 24... now i grab a 6 and maybe a 12.
i realized my problem is that i just dont know when to stop. once i start im the one at 6 in the morning telling everyone to keep going.

i sit here with the smell of alcohol emitting from my pores. I occasionally think about what you're saying right now. But with spring arriving I know resistance if futile (for me).

you just have to set limits for yourself
and if you drive it becomes easier. if i go somewhere and i don't really want to drink i will drive and only have 1 beer. i used to think, how the hell am i gonna have fun not drinking? but actually, i still have a good time with my friends even if i have 1 or 2 beers

I was going to say I've recently given it up Tuesday through Thursday, but then I realized that's still more than you currently drink!

Kinetic, I'm the same. I'm always the last one standing. Last night I got invited over somewhere to "get a drink on" (exact words). I started drinking when I got home from work, then by 11:30pm they were going to bed. 11 fucking 30!!! I actually managed to quit drinking then and sit with a cup of tea instead but I really wanted to keep going.
It's not only the amount of drinking that bothers me. Oops, I've finished my beer, need another, stat. Chain drinking. Bu then again, isn't that the way everyone does it?
I've managed to lose about 10lbs in the last 7 weeks from eating properly and getting (not much) exercise. I know if I quit drinking I could have easily doubled that. Took in over 4,000 cals yesterday and way over half of that was alcohol.

I don't like the taste.
Blessing and curse.
- i love the tast
a blessing and a curse, tooalicetheblue - More of a blessing, in my mind. I like not having anything to numb.juhls
- Honestly though, it's more of a challenge to NOT drink out in social situations. I usually don't mind, but don't force me.juhls

I'm also not the sort of person who can go to a bar or sit with people and have just one drink. I have this compulsion to keep going and make a thing of it every single time.

I'm trying it tonight. Booze free. Let's see how long I'll last.

A Scot in the states? Christ, you could probaly drink them under the table in yer sleep
- I think that's the problem. Or maybe it's a good thing. I don't need any encouragement.5timuli

I think their needs to be a good purpose for quitting in order for it to be easy. For example, I'm a very active rock climber. On top of that I'm always hiking and backpacking as well. I inadvertently stopped drinking for a couple of reasons:
1. I'd be climbing/going outside during the weekend so I really couldn't party weekend nights if I wanted to get up early.
2. When I would drink I wouldn't even get drunk or even buzzed even if I drank a lot. I just felt like shit during and the next morning.
3. I'd make stupid decisions while drinking. Not like DUI stupid but texting the ex, or having bad thoughts about myself which didn't make me feel good as a person.I've become a much better climber and feel a lot better about myself because of it. I'm so preoccupied and focused on a certain activity that drinking and partying has lost it's appeal. Don't get me wrong though I enjoy a nice cold beer after a long hard day outside with some close friends.
I guess what I'm trying to say is find a physical hobby that you can concentrate on and in which giving up alcohol is beneficial. Going to the gym is ok but IMO that gets boring quick. Try mountain biking, road biking, running, trail running, hiking, etc.

I am sorry.

fourthgen said it well (1. and 3. for personaly) ; find a hobby, that is the best resaon to give up drinking.
right after my diploma (maybe 3 or 4 months) I started learning to ride motorcycles. Now I enjoy waking up early on my weekends and go for a ride. I'll never drink too much on evenings just because I don't want to waste my time anymore the day after.

i would have to move to quit drinking. I LOVE really good beer. This town is literally a destination for beer lovers. 6-7 local breweries... and they're all very good.

I like liquor and wine. Beer dehydrates me.

Sounds like you're bored of the results: wasted time... friends you barely know without alcohol there... thin wallet... poor health.

The easiest way is to replace it with something..
