I think their needs to be a good purpose for quitting in order for it to be easy. For example, I'm a very active rock climber. On top of that I'm always hiking and backpacking as well. I inadvertently stopped drinking for a couple of reasons:

    1. I'd be climbing/going outside during the weekend so I really couldn't party weekend nights if I wanted to get up early.
    2. When I would drink I wouldn't even get drunk or even buzzed even if I drank a lot. I just felt like shit during and the next morning.
    3. I'd make stupid decisions while drinking. Not like DUI stupid but texting the ex, or having bad thoughts about myself which didn't make me feel good as a person.

I've become a much better climber and feel a lot better about myself because of it. I'm so preoccupied and focused on a certain activity that drinking and partying has lost it's appeal. Don't get me wrong though I enjoy a nice cold beer after a long hard day outside with some close friends.

I guess what I'm trying to say is find a physical hobby that you can concentrate on and in which giving up alcohol is beneficial. Going to the gym is ok but IMO that gets boring quick. Try mountain biking, road biking, running, trail running, hiking, etc.
