uber.. don't get a cannondale, your money can't be spent so much better on other bikes.
kona, rocky mountain, specialized, santa cruz... much better choices.
and get an all-mountain bike with rear suspension. doesn't have to be a big heavy bouncy FR or DH beast. they make some pretty light full suspension bikes that climb well.

No one's asked what your budget is... It's really easy to spend more money than originally intended so be pretty firm about what you want out of the bike. If you think you're going to graduate up to more technical or aggressive riding, then consider an All Mountain bike. But if you're going to be happy on your local singletrack for a while, then go with a good quality hard tail or an XC full suspension depending on your budget and how comfortable you want the ride to be. If you get an All Mountain bike without needing it, you'll end up with a heavier bike, which will in turn be less fun on your local trails.

also who you will be riding with. I thought 4" would be plenty, but I would have liked the longer travel better (although I rode with some guys that are crossing the all mtn into downhill territory).

go for an all mountain, more fun, less likely to go over the bars, more plush.

I'm gonna have to go with the_CCG... buy something modest to begin with (I usually shop for the frame and figure I can upgrade the components as I break them) and move on up as you ride (if you need to all).
There's so much you need to figure out about how you ride and what works best in a bike for you that dishing out for your first bike is enough of a gamble.
Seriously, my city winter bike is a 110$ piece of shit and it's just fine to get around =)

where are the best trails in the US/Canada that aren't super technical?
- horton0
um, that's a pretty broad area to search?
i can vouch for vancouver/van.island canada. trails for all levels to be found pretty much anywhere.
but i suppose you may just be fluffing your thread.

I'm really not fluffing my thread. I'm going to pick up mountain biking.
