I'm gonna have to go with the_CCG... buy something modest to begin with (I usually shop for the frame and figure I can upgrade the components as I break them) and move on up as you ride (if you need to all).
There's so much you need to figure out about how you ride and what works best in a bike for you that dishing out for your first bike is enough of a gamble.
Seriously, my city winter bike is a 110$ piece of shit and it's just fine to get around =)
