I'm going to be in DC on business Wednesday March 4th - Thursday 5th and my fiance will be flying out that Thursday so we can spend the weekend there.
Any suggestions on cool stuff to do other than the usual DC landmarks, museums, etc? She was there on business a while back and had no idea where a cool shopping area was - like Newberry street in Boston, for example. Where is an area like this? Georgetown? Cool boutiques, bookstores, etc. Any great restaurants you'd suggest?
Thanks for the suggestions. I've not been there since 8th grade waaaayyy back in 1992.

Huh, weird - I'll be there the same weekend mg33. Can a DCer tell me which hotel is a better stay: The Intercontinental or the Mandarin Oriental? Plus all the questions mg33 asked...

Georgetown is probably your best Newberry Street analogue. Annie Creamcheese on M Street is a cool boutique on M Street there, but you'll find. Georgetown Cupcakes on Potomac Street is seems to be a popular place for sweet snacks. The western end of M Street also has a lot of interior design industry stores, so if you have any home improvement projects on the horizon, it could be a fun place for a couple to window shop. Also, a nice bookstore is on the opposite, east end of M Street - Bartleby's Books. Mendecino is a nice wine bar on M Street. Not bad for a dinner either. Mie N Yu is a cool M Street spot for drinks too.
Also with restaurants - maybe lookup the websites for Centrale, Blue Duck Tavern, and Obelisk. See what interests you.
I'll repost if I can think of anything else.
- Fuck. A shot for each time I said M Street.waterhouse
- And I think that restaurant is properly spelled Mendocino.waterhouse

Also, what areas are the best to avoid - I know DC can be a rough place...
- As long as you stay in NW, you'll be fine. DC isn't as rough as it used to be.apines

The Mandarin is going to be a better hotel hands down in terms of service, room quality, and possibly even views. That said, if you look on a map, some may prefer the central location of the Intercontinental more.
- Is touristy stuff walkable from the Mandarin? Or will we need car/public transport?TheBlueOne
- It's walkable.waterhouse
- cool. Thanks!TheBlueOne

Areas to avoid - just don't go too far in either direction of the green line.

also the old post office museum next to the reagen building has some sweet views.

definitely check out the mall. i think all the memorials have been recently renovated including the washington memorial and the vietnam wall.
also the WWII memorial is relatively new and quite nice.
can't go wrong in the national gallery or hirshorn museums
- think they may still be working on the lincoln7point34
- the subway makes it relatively painless to get around. it's a very small system compared to NY7point34
- could check out the zoo. my grandfather designed the bird cage there.7point34
- not sure if the original structure still stands. haven't been in years7point34

I'm probably staying at the Four Points by Sheraton Downtown, it's close to the client I'll be visiting and not far from the Capitol from what I've heard.

& though pricey i've wanted to go to 1789

1789 is classic Georgetown, and the years when it was recommended as the best in DC are decades back. People say it was one of JFK's favorite spots. It's directly above an old bar and popular Georgetown University haunt called the Tombs - apparently a favorite of Bill Clinton when he was an undergrad. Now, the bar is part of the Clyde's group and has more of an Applebee's feel in my opinion.
Additionally these places are directly across the street from the Exorcist house. Not a huge deal in itself, unless you're a fan of the movie.

Also for a good dinner, look into Restaurant Nora.

Has anyone mentioned the spy museum yet?

Going to Ben's Chili Bowl is the most DC thing you can do.
If you want to avoid the typical tourist spots like Georgetown, you can check out Adams Morgan. A lot of bars and boutiques.

For live music a visit to the 930 club is a must.
I worked two nights as a bouncer there !
