The logo itself is not an Obama ripoff, but they are definitely riding his wave off "hope" and "change." They even put will.i.am in a commercial, just in case anybody wasn't sure what they were doing.
I never really liked Pepsi, but It actually fits quite well with their brand. They needed a "refresh" and this was great timing.

It looks like shit.
The identity has now placed itself into "everything else" overly corporate.Guess they are not concerned with standing out in the market place anymore.
More bells and whistles.

Yes, it is a rip. The Pepsi rebranding IS based around Obama's election and branding.
The new Pepsi marketing theme of "Refresh America" was launched around the same time as Obama's inauguration. The pallette is very similar, as is the chosen font for many of the billboards (the distinctive Futura-looking typeface Gotham).
The new Pepsi marketing campaign is a direct reaction to Obama's election. You would be a fool to think otherwise.

In the ad campaigns they're playing off the election just like hundreds of other companies. To say the logo is a rip is quite a stretch imo. It's EXACTLY like their previous 5 logos except the white band is askew.

look at the PDF.
This is one of the greatest examples of reverse engineering of a concept to create pseudo scientific rationalization for a design (most of the claims have no ground whatsoever – e.g. golden ratio is not proven to create more pleasing proportions. It is also almost certain that it is concept that only dates back to the renaissance). One can only admire the creativity that went into convincing the client that their half mill was well spent on the design.
