depends on the news, not the economy?

Ummm, yah, what this bloke above said is the way I think as well.
Look at it like this: rewind to May, June, and July. Unless you were wrapped-up yourself in a US-based subprime mortgage, the only "crisis" you even heard about was just that—that there was a mortgage fiasco going on in the US, and it was contained to 3 states, but those 3 states were hit quite hard: California, Nevada, and Florida. As the summer went on, we heard more and more rumblings about these mortgage-backed securities, and how they were dragging-down bank stocks in the US, and then come late August: BOOM. Wall St suddenly tanks at levels never seen, and then by October, the ENTIRE PLANET IS IN A PANIC.
Give me a fucking break—there's more to this than we know. If the global economy is that fragile, and can tank that fast—then we live in nothing more than an illusion, and an economic house of cards.
Is it real? Yep. Are we being told the truth about it all? Not a chance...

from what I gather, the 500Trillion worth of derivates backed by absolutely nothing has a big part to play in it. subprime was just a trigger.
essentially when those contracts get cashed (like when Lehman brothers went bankrupt) it sucks money out of the banking systems like a big vacuum, because all the banks hold a little piece of each other. They all ask for their money back to cover off the insurance policy at the same time, or risk going under themselves. It's a bank-run by any other name, and it's on the whole banking system.
- BTW 500Trillion is about 11 times world GDP, so that's alot.monNom

There's a good recording on Google Video of Chomsky's lecture on the emerging framework of world power. It's about 12 months old so it was developed prior to a lot of the current issues came up, but it's still interesting. I would challenge anyone on this forum to say they learn nothing new listening to Chomsky. The man is a frickin' genius.

Money Watch: McDonald's Profits Soar
Oakbrook-based McDonald's is one of the few companies doing well in the recession. Meanwhile, America's biggest companies are downsizing.

there were gabillions of dollars being made by banks through forecasted earnings and unregulated bets. had little to do with the american housing market.

I have noticed that I can buy lots of clothing and electronics incredibly cheap right now, knock on wood that I am still employed. I know many people who are unemployed. The US is bleeding jobs like crazy right now. I am forced to take care of my unemployed Mother for the first time in my life. I hope that I can continue to do that.

"If the global economy is that fragile, and can tank that fast—then we live in nothing more than an illusion, and an economic house of cards."
It's fragile when you let an incompetent person command a very powerful, rich, and influential nation for eight years. Illusion and an economic house of cards is the result of the incompetence.
