first off: this is my first post in 2009 so happy new year to you all!
benfal99. many moons ago i took a 100, 200 and 300 level life drawing courses in college. by far i feel as though these were where i learned the absolute most about fine tuning and progressing my drawing skill.
we'd spend a week just trying to capture the form of the body, which really which really taught me how to look past all the details and first focus on the basic shape of the form (ie. don't look her square in the titties and vagina)
with these classes we were also given anatomy lessons and told to study anatomy books. from a models pose for a month we'd just draw the skeletal structure. after we'd draw that for a month we'd then lay another sheet of semi-transparent paper over the top and draw the models muscle structure over the top of the bone structures we drew a month earlier.
this was accomplished by posing the model in the same pose for 2 months or so at a time.
aside from seeing many a nekkid ladies of all shapes and sizes (and unfortunately an equal amount of men) it teaches you to that if you're going to draw something... anything... to first look at it's inner structure, it's form, it's composition and skeletal structure then draw outward.
it really made me a better artist.
it's a damn shame though i haven't picked up a pencil and drawn like that in years.
:(
you'll learn a lot from these classes dude. have fun and hopefully you have a great professor.

i miss it tons... i had a high school art teacher who encouraged me to start going when i was 15-16. kept at it solid right through college.

ben.
that class can be really awkward. i didnt have a model rip a fart. but we had one where the 40+ dude kept making sexy eyes to the girls in my class. and there was another time where nobody could concentrate because the lady had some unexplainable fuzz/lint in the weirdest spots.
have fun. I'm happy i finished those as fast as possible.

Life drawing taught me why artists stick their pencils at their subjects at strange angles

The first time all the guys looked at each other and we didn't know what to do bc the model was pretty hot. Another time a girl was about to undress and the teacher said let's make this a clothed session ... We weren't too happy, lol. There's always the fat chick and there was this guy that posed with a staff, he had the best poses. We had a lot of suicide girls type female models, it was awesome. But then, once I had a gay prof and it was mostly dudes, it was lame. Guys are boxy and so boring.
- did you go to pratt? we had a guy with a staff too. instructor called it a cane once and he got pissedsseo

It makes sense to have uglier people though. It would be too distracting otherwise. I mean, look at most of the posts in this thread. People can't stop complaining about drawing male figures.

I can't believe how many immature responses and comments are here about the models - especially male models. Grow up and you might learn something useful. Life modeling is not easy work. People do it for a lot of different reasons and one of those reasons is because they believe in the collaborative process of creating figurative art. As adults training to be an artist, the gender of your model should not be relevant.
- hahah, you're really so affronted by 2 year old opinions on the internet? Goodness.detritus
- Professional art model indeed.
You make money from standing around? No wonder you're so easily enraged.detritus - well - it's kind of spam, but at least you've thought about making it relevant and have tried to add to the conversation.lukus_W2

i saw one of our models from uni out at a bookstore one evening. she came over and started asking where she knew me from. it was a little awkward for both of us when she worked it out. i told her that if it helped break the tension, she could strip down and i'd draw her and we'd carry on the conversation... id didnt really say that.

One time in uni during the first week of study, our life model didn't turn up. Our tutor suggested we partner up to sketch each other as a way of getting to know each other. This got lost in translation and a Polish girl was half-way to her underwear before somebody asked her what she was doing.

I remember one day in college we were asked to pick a position around the room to draw from. It was the male model that day (I think his name was George). My friend at the time sat himself down right in front of him, about 3 feet from his crotch and proceeded to draw only his penis in the minutest of detail.
At our final show he scored a position right at the door as you walk in. That ultra-detailed penis drawing was the only thing visible from outside the room.

I am not very good at drawing things other than logos, but it always impressed me in my drawing classes how easy and quick it is to get better.

When I was in college, there were all these drawings and sculptures of what looked like a naked pregnant man... .you'd see them everywhere.. at first I thought it was a certain woman's work, making a specific statement,etc... but then one day I saw a guy walking around wearing a robe who looked pregnant... he was the model.....

We had a really old guy model for us when I was in college. While his back was turned to me I noticed the other side of class occasionally flash looks of horror and quickly hide behind their drawings all at once. After class I found out the guy was dripping off and on the whole time.
- i saw one dude form a six-inch string from the tip of this dick to his thighscarabin
