fock. so about a year and a half ago I broke my back and pelvis in a snowboarding accident (I was under a different username then, here is that post: http://www.qbn.com/topics/432096… )
so I'm finally feeling rehabbed enough to go again, and what happens? I tear my freaking calf muscle in my left leg. Separated the muscle and caused a huge hematoma that had to be drained because my calf got the size of a cantaloupe. Fucking scary and bloody awful painful. I think its time to retire from the sport I used to live and breathe and has brought me so much joy in my life.

Well, it never feels good to know that you have to abandon something(person) you love.
- epete220
damn. I have blown my knee out twice playing basketball but atleast you got some prescrips lol
- Amicus0
don't give up!!! just take it a little easier for a while when you get back on the slopes.
Oh.. and I know it's not very extreme but try warming up and stretching!!!

That sucks, Jeff. Hope you feel better soon.
I do like snowboarding (it seems that many people get injured...)- I don't mean I like snowboarding because people get injured, obviouslyJaline
- haha, I like bullriding cause people get injured tho! I think for what they do to the bulls, they deserve their injuries!threadpost

I snowboarded from when I was really young... After a skull fracture, broken nose, knocked out teeth, broken arm dislocated elbow and shoulder and a ton of amazing riding, I switched back to skiing. Haven't suffered more than a couple bumps and bruises and I haven't looked back. Kindof nice to know riding was just a little bit more burly (for me) than being on planks. I suggest you give it a try.
- lol wtfkld
- Yeah, it's true. I never get sore or injured while skiing compared to snowboarding.Jaline
- *waits to get injured next timeJaline
- I love park more than anything else, just seems I get punished less on skis.ntslide
- don't say that, wait to be ok Jaline, your expectations are the future!rafalski
- yeah....but then you have to ski...dewilde

^ Yeah I grew up in utah and skied competitively for about 12 years, I had a few minor injuries, the worst of which was a hyperextension fracture of my elbow. But NOTHING so bad as breaking my back and pelvis a year+ ago. That is the closest to death you can feel. it was really tough. Im just discouraged cause I get back on my board this season, and the first half is going great, and now Im out again for the rest of the season with surgery again to come.
Maybe I will get back on the planks

best wishes in your recovery. If you have a pass for the rest of the season I'd recommend still heading up to the hill, park it on the showoff jump or rail and take some pics. That's what I did and it was like mental rehab.
- true, good call. I dont have a pass but I can see how that would be good mental therapy.threadpost

Sorry to hear you hurt yourself man, but seriously, you shouldn't quit.
Even if it means just doing mellow cruisers for the rest of your life, it's still better than giving it up completely. I've had a pretty lucky run with no major injuries so far, but I'm not sure I could ever quit even if I'd hurt myself as badly as you have.
Gotta pick yourself up after you fall down.

There's a lot of people suggesting I hop up and dust myself off. Understand it was a very lucky situation I was actually able to survive, let alone walk after my back injury. That kind of pain and disability really messes with your head, you get hooked on pain killers and then you have that monkey on your back.
So this season, as I said, dusted myself off and got back on the horse so to speak, and I took it really easy. No park riding, nothing crazy, just fun slow rollers and big wide turns, small grabs etc but NOTHING like before.
This last saturday I was just in some deep po po :) and pretty much riding a wheelie to keep from burying my nose in the snow and sinking. Just sorta lost my balance, got too far forward and dug the tip of the board into the snow. My momentum then carried me forward and put all the pressure on my frontside leg (I ride regular). and I could just feel the muscle come apart from the bone. Instant pain.
So then, with all the talk of keep on riding despite all of this, Im just not sure. I promised everyone I wouldnt get hurt again after my back, now Im in lots of trouble with my mom and family (even my ex g.f. is pissed) But I love it so much, I'm sure this wont be the last time. Thanks for all your concerns and well wishes.

How did you manage to tear it? I have a broken pinky that is healing at the moment and I've also torn my rhomboid muscle in my back twice, second time just recently. It was literally the most excruciating pain of my entire life.
Though neither of my injuries were snowboard-related... :P

My friend crashed on huge big gap and his knee hit him in the face shattering his cheek-bone. After re-constructive surgery on his face he decided to quit. I can't blame him. I guess it's hard for me to understand since I've never been badly hurt.
- metal_leg_will0
Damn, that truly sucks man. Especially since you just recovered from an earlier injury which, based on your description, sounded extremely traumatic.
I've been down a similar road and I'm reminded of it by the metal parts in my leg.
Feel better, heal fast and take it easy.

That sounds excruciating, a long long long rehab awaits if you EVER consider getting back on the board... and if you do you'd be taking it easy for the rest of days...
Rest, heal, renew.

why did i read this post...im just getting into snowboarding. best of luck to you my fellow qbner, ive never heard of a torn calf though, seriously not once, and ive been riding bmx for about 6 years.
- threadpost0
no no, come on now. no reason to rethink your decisions to go snowboarding. I just have shiite luck. It's all on me. I wasn't doing anything nuts this time (when I broke my back I was riding rather aggressively) I just had an accident.
- im still going for it...only live once. heal quickly though, being injured is the worst.svenreed
