I was all about NOT getting into this thread, but I just can't resist.
I also live in the area, and people from my family live in the areas that were just recently under rocket attacks from the Gaza strip.
What I can tell you is pretty simple.
If and when ALL political leadership, not only Palestinian and Israeli really wanted peace in the region, I am sure it would happen within months or less. But, both our politicians, Israeli and Palestinian alike WANT this conflict and why?
    1. The Israeli political scene is mostly populated by extremely corrupted people from or very closely tied to the Security Apparatus, The Army and such. These people know nothing else except violence and conflict. As community leaders they are all more-less impotent so in order to keep their positions they need an outside threat all the time. And we have one in Palestinians. Instead of trying to remove the threat through negotiation, what we do is exactly the opposite. We terrorize the same way we are terrorized, with simple people in the middle. Honestly, nobody in the Israeli political leadership doesn't give a damn about 20 or 30 people dead in a bus in a terror attack or 500 dead in Gaza. They only care about the U.S. military aid an more millions of dollars pouring into their pockets. All in the name of "democracy"!
    2. The Palestinian leadership is not that much different. Just as an example, Palestinian PM (Mr. Abbas) actually holds majority of shares in the cement factories that sold cement to Israelis for building the separation barrier. Millions and millions of dollars of aid were poured into the West Bank and Gaza since the Oslo agreement. Where is the money, you may ask? Where are the hospitals, infrastructure, schools and the similar? Ask the Palestinian political "elite". Ask Suha Arafat about her accounts? How's that for leadership. So, there too, nobody cares if children die in Gaza, they actually WANT that to happen, so they can film it continue stealing from the people.
    3. Than you have the EU and the U.S. that actually fuel the "little" conflict all the time, because laundering money and selling weapons is much easier this way. NGO are great for tax relief.

Instead of blaming this or the other side, we should all blame our own leadership for doing NOTHING while innocent people get killed. And not only in Gaza but everywhere else in the world all the time...

War is good business and that is what is behind this or any other conflict!

    • well said!!pnut

"i think it would be realistic to say the US and UK would retaliate with similar force if they were put under threat and attacked constantly like the vast majority of israel is on a daily basis."

I don't seem to recall air strikes from helicopter gunships in Northern Ireland to quell a handful of troublemakers. The force is simply disproportionate.

  • Samush0

    @moth:
i wouldn't call a ruling terrorist group, hammas, a "handful of troublemakers" they are wide-spread well equipped army that attack israel every day.
this is a very different situation to northern ireland.

i just watched some Jewish comedy on the telly. I feel better now. I didn't know so many Jews abroad find their Israeli leaders quite a fraud as well.

Anyway, I am still angered about the violence and can't understand why other nations would finance the Israeli army.

gotta love the retards with their posts blaming israel.

they're responding to over 6,000 rockets/missiles/mortars being launched from hamas palestinians in gaza into their country.

if this happened in the us no one would say shit.

wait, we got attacked and invaded iraq.

    and afganhastan.

israel is dealing with a terrorist organization, not a legit country or govmnt.

dconstrukt, you don't understand the conflict don't you,
the land IS NOT a propriety of Israelis, they got it through the british,
palestinian and other arabs have been living there for centuries.
this conflict is too complex to be downgraded to the level of "we got attacked and invaded iraq and afganhastan (wherever that is)"

irakis didn't attack the US and its still not proven that afganhastan (wherever that is) was part of the plan, its just an assumption (how about the saudis?).

“I wasn’t goin to post in this thread but...”

This shit ain’t about some ineffectual bottle rockets. Israel has been planning this strategy since Hamas got into power a LONG time ago. The debacle of Lebanon was part of the same strategy. To *impose* a unilateral settlement through overwhelming military force.

Israel will never ever give up the whole of Jerusalem or what it calls Judae and Sumeria in a negotiated settlement. The Palestinians wont accept anything less. Israeli’s face a stark choice of having to assimilate a Palestinian population that is set to outstrip the Jewish one in 20-50 years, or force the Palestinians to accept its own solution.

Ariel Sharon was keenly aware that time was running out, and that the country needed to extricate itself of Palestinians as quickly as possible. That was the thinking behind the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the consolidation of territory in the West Bank, whilst at the same time bombing and dismantling Fatah.

This policy backfired when Hamas was elected. Israeli strategists realised that they could not maintain an ethno-supremacist state of Jews simply by creating “facts on the ground.” The claims of non-Jews in the land is an ever present reality that would sooner or later undermine the whole project.

Since then Israel has sought to bully its opponents into submission through the unabashed use of violence. First in Lebanon, and now in Gaza. It thinks that it can use this strategy to break the resolve of its enemies to challenge what Israel has acquired through might.

It uses the pretexts of incitement as a cynical media game when the plans set in motion encapsulate a much broader geo-political objective.

Don't worry though, this is the last gasp effort of Israel's attempt to maintain a Jewish only state. No matter how hard it tries, it can't extricate itself of its Palestinian problem. The Palestinians will never negotiate a settlement that doesn't acknowledge the land that was stolen from them. Israel's only option to maintain a Jewish majority state is to wipe out the Palestinian people entirely. This is its latest, futile attempt to beat the Palestinians into bloody submission. For the Palestinians, this is good news, because after this, Israel has run out of options.

In the meantime, I’m gonna console myself by watching Israel squander its last remnants of sympathy in the international sphere.

Of course Zionism has one other option, to wipe out every single Palestinian in the region. That would be the obvious and BEST option.

  • dconstrukt0

    Georgesll....

I do understand, I'm american israeli. Jews actually lived there for CENTURIES before palestinians. Lets get that straight. We were removed from the land through various occupations over time.

Thats why we came back there to rebuild our country.

    But...

I agree 100% with the dude who lives there and posted above. BOTH gvmnts are totally corrupt in some way.

    BUT

Israel just isn't attacking for their health.... they're responding to missile attacks into their own country.

shouldn't a country have the right to defend itsself?

    people are such fucking hypocrites.

The US invaded a country after 9/11 for godsakes! (iraq), so don't sit here and tell me israel is wrong.

They are not dealing with another country, they are removing TERRORIST organization funded by iran who the us was going to bomb recently.

If a terrorist group was launching missiles into the US from mexico what do you think the US would do?

    JUst a thought -

Most of the people blaming Israel here DID NOT support the US invading Iraq.

    • exactly!moamoa
    • lol how stupid can a person be when they believe a country can't defend itself?dconstrukt
  • dconstrukt0

the land was stolen from them?

good one. No one stole anything. If you remember history, israel was occupied and ruled by jews for thousands of years.

    And what about american indians?

Didn't the US steal the american land from them and stuck them on reservations?

    whats the difference here?

PAlestinians didn't want israel when the british occupied it. They didn't want it because there was nothing there. Now that israel built it up they want it.

Palestinians are stuck here because they're dealing with terror groups who are using them for their own political agendas.

How else can you sit here and explain why a terrorist group is running the gaza?

    • Shit yeah, you're right. I change my mind. Disregard anything i said.Khurram

I will say it again, if the Israeli/Gaza map looked exactly as it did in the 1940's defending their position would be more reasonable, but because they keep settling in Palestinean land, It is difficult to feel sorry for them when the Palestineans retaliate.

    • that map is totally forgetting the fact that in 1946 there was very little on any of the landSamush
