Alright, so I recently got fired last week. My boss was a piece of shit and i know for a fact i cant use her for a reference so when the possible job i am applying for asks....why can't we talk to your direct supervisor what is a good explanation to use? Also is it legit to reference someone else in your office that you worked with as a reference other than your direct supervisor?

You can reference anyone you like. If your potential employer asks why they can’t talk to your direct supervisor, tell them you have referenced someone who you think will give a fairer and more unbiased reference of you abilities.
Mind you, I’ve never got a job from an interview, so what do I know?

everyone has differences with their superiors from time to time - just use someone else from the co. as a reference and move on.
if someone asks, just be up front about the situation. but remember to never speak negatively about a company or person you worked with.
anyway, your talent should really be the deciding factor whether or not you get hired.

tjw0511, this is a very delicate and pertinent question. you shouldn't be made to feel like you have to hide your identity or your past working history.
i hope things turn around and you find someone you work well with. just put it down as a freelance job.

why did you get fired specifically? I'm close to getting canned myself and am looking for stories of conflict (which I am experiencing with a particularly difficult CD)

How about just completely leaving the job off your resume? Is that considered illegal/ lying?

Good luck, tjw0511. I hope you get the job you want.

In response to _salisae_: I can put it down as a freelance job? won't they ask or try to find out about that?

In response to cannonball: I got fired because a) our boss made a boo boo and went over on her budget making her look at things that werent a problem before like being 2-3 minutes late like maybe twice in 3 months when I'm pretty much the first person in our building at 8am or like being seen wearing a t-shirt on jeans Friday instead of wearing a polo shirt, which then resulted in a minor write-up....which i had to sign. Then a week later I came in with my portable harddrive and copied all my work onto it(which is what i usually do once a week) just so i have a back up and what not, and not even 2 hours later i get called down to a room where I met with my director, HR lady, and a lawyer....which then she informed me from that moment forward i was terminated, and that i needed to go grab my portable HD that i had copied all of my work(psd's/coded websites/etc.) and get them removed before i exit the building. sucks i know....

all you have is your word. chances are that working at a place that dosen't take you on your word is bad news all over again for you

sounds like all those events you listed were the result of them gathering evidence for your grounds for termination. must have been brewing earlier than that

tjw0511 - keep in mind that a lot of companies do real background checks. So if you say you were a freelancer or you left in good terms or your reference was not the one who supervised your work - then you risk getting caught.
Unless your formal boss is real evil, there shouldn't be a problem. Just put down "Terminated - not performance or discipline related"
This is a tough environment, everyone knows people get fired for no reason at all, and your honesty is probably more beneficial than trying to come up with all different ways of avoiding what happened.

I dont know how many other place you have worked but say you held relevant positions at two other places prior to this place. All you really have to do is grab about two reference from both places. It helps if they are on the management side of things or were your supervisor. If you know they will paint you in a positive light it doesnt matter that you tell the new company you were fired. Most will understand it proably was a certain person at your last company and not you. The same thing about wether you are an ass or not in the workplace. If you work for a company, and 2 people dont like you but the other 98 do, chances are those 2 people are the problem. If like 20 people dont like you... well you probably need to take a long look in the mirror.
