The little shops with 1 to 5 employees that do real solid work (especially web) are going to be the ones to do well right now.
The fact that their rates are lower than many large agencies, due to less overhead, will be an obvious plus to clients. Better flexibility and more personal client relations will be a big asset as well.If you are looking for work, I would be looking at the smaller guys who may find themselves actually growing a bit during this mess while they fill some of the void left by larger companies.
Many companies are not going to stop advertising, as during poor economic times they need to be more visible than ever to fight over the limited consumer dollar. But HOW they spend their advertising money will be the change. As eluded to in other posts... print is not the place. People will not be buying frivolous magazines right now, but they'll sure be surfing the web. But even in that, regular old banner ads and sponsorships won't due, they'll be looking for something really innovative.

can you fire yourself?
- olli1010
I work for a medium sized global agency and we did all our firing (mostly freelancers) last month. We're actually hiring but it's dramatically down from where it was a few months ago.
- not strictly firing is it, if it's freelancersbabaganush
- true, but some were on long-term contracts and many were let go in the middle of their employment. wasn't just wait until the contract is done and don't re-hire.olli101

Got laid off yesterday... knew it was coming so lined up a load of freelance stuff. May move to france for the snow season and do it all from there.
- sounds like you got it covered. nice. :-)akrokdesign
- I want to move to France!marchelo
- good luck hoopy!kona
- any agency getting busy would prioritize working with freelancers over hiring Full time these days.. so it's not too bad a place to be. (same with companies hiring studios vs. freelancers-we look cheaper so win x2)BenWeeks

^ Same here.
Small agency. Work is still coming in but mostly on web stuff. Based from what I see, there will be a certain stability here for months to come.

Salary cuts at my 9 to 5'er agency position. About 10% they said to try and help the company get through until next year.
On the other hand.... My freelance side-work has never been better/busier. Helps with the bills and confidence of being able to support the family.
Maybe the larger overpriced agency model isn't as attractive to most people right now?

Seems like the idea that freelancers do better in a poo economy aren't really holding up. Google let go a bunch of contractors and I've heard that refrain a lot lately.
- wait until next year - when 2nd round cuts come and experienced freelancers are in demandbabaganush

Hey tymeframe—
Where do you work? Wilmington is on my shortlist of desirable places to live. What's the design scene like there? I used to go surfing in Hatteras every year, I'd throttle a rhinoceros to live that close.

I know so many people that have been laid off at least 50 without any exaggeration... Although I did work for Hearst.

can you imagine all the laid off designers now circling like vultures around the few jobs that open up?

small firm 50ish people - laid off 7 before Thanksgiving
right now we're all being paid just for our billable hours plus mandatory unpaid time off from Dec 26 to Jan 4 - if projects don't start up in Jan I'm not sure what will happen
