Khurram:
"When corporations are chopping entire teams, outsourcing and rejigging - they look for productivity and return,"This is why I think Online has a tendency to be a growth industry. Now more than every it is the price of entry to any advertising campaign. If you don't have a website you become invisible.
jamble:
"Lets discuss the possibility that many companies may need to expand their online"The great thing about online is that if you have a drive to web campaign that is properly built and tracked you can show your clients a direct return on advertising.
I am curious what some designer would think if their designs are directly quantified like this? Good designs means lots of traffic, bad designs means little to no traffic.
Any thoughts?
- Yeah, i predict more shit will move online. That should do well. I have figures to prove it.Khurram

Another example...where people make money despite of this situation>
A friend of mine has been told that their ebusiness (external company) will charge them £240 to amend their site due to this VAT reduction rate.
So, If the Gvt decides something like that, why should a business pay £240 to amend something (database hardcoded stuff) which is beyond their ctrl?

It can all be outsourced to India.

on a serious note...
If people here think that design is expendable and not central to economic stability and growth you don't deserve to be around after the recession.
- MarketMaker0
"central to economic stability and growth"
I'd love to hear an elaboration on that one.
- Design is the core activity of the manufacturing industries I've worked in (unfortunately not everyone at the company realised this)ribit
- realised it..ribit
- The core? What about the actual products that are manufactured?MarketMaker

^ Everything, bar the decision to outsource everything to india, can be outsourced to India. We have already learned the lesson of outsourcing too much to india. We already know that the showboat capsizes. Its not a long term concern.
- MarketMaker0
My profession can't be outsourced to India.

This is precisely why many of the younger designers, like myself, worked hard to diversify our skill-set. People who have solid visual design skills, yet can also take a web project from start to finish without the help of a developer, are very valuable. And, if you can take what you did from the web, and carry it over to motion and print by yourself, then you'll have an easier time finding jobs.
Of course, it's also important to make sure you're getting paid well when doing so much work. I hate seeing these Craigslist ads that want you to design a 40-page site for $700, and then "maybe" that will lead to future work. Gee thanks...

@eryx and lowimpact
Bluejam's article earlier in the thread, though about product design mainly, is pretty interesting in that it touches on re-designing the way people market/work/etc. This I think is the perfect time to really start to see the benefits of all these new modes of communication the internet gives us starting to fundamentally change the way companies 'advertise' for want of a better word. I can't wait, its going to be loads of fun changing EVERYTHING FOREVER.

Start looking for a J-O-B if your agency has a major car manufacturer and/or travel agency.

Oh no the sky is falling!
You know, if i did get laid off, I think it would be an opportunity for long hours writing my book again and cheap coffee. I'd probably loose some weight, remember that I know how to live spartan, and feel happier, even if there is no income.
To be honest, I never saw myself relatively making that much money. I was always in it just to make stuff thats interesting, and lets see... writing fantasy fiction vs comping corporate websites? Unless you've lost all perspective that's a no brainer there.
I think you all should have that one iron in the fire that's just yours that can shoulder a little bit of faith. It helps to get through the rough patches. That book I'm writing is mine (and who cares if it doesn't get published).
