...How do I get an image with a massive black coverage down to 200% without effecting the colours too much
Having to do some artwork and don't have a clue?!

Whats the makeup of the black you're using?

- thats peach!mirrorball
- That's your standard aRGB 4/c black alright!duckofrubber

pshop - go to colour settings. change to custom then custom cmyk and your maximum black and total ink can be adjusted in there

Well if you are just resizing down then what the problem.

As agentfour said, shift+cmd+k brings up colour settings, then go to the 'CMYK' drop down menu. Then go to 'custom CMYK', its the first option in the box, then set your Black Ink Limit and/or Total Ink Limit. You might need to play with it a little but it'll get you there.
Then convert your image from RGB to CMYK and it'll use the new calculations to keep the ik density to 200% as opposed to PS's default 300%.

Thank you agentfour & ian, yes it works woo hoo!!!

Agree, das useful, but can someone explain why?

Its about the dot gain of inks on paper. The hight the density of ink, the more ink is actually being laid on the stock, so this can cause problems, depending on the stock being used.
Ie, newspapers have lower ink density percentages because he paper is lighter and more porus, it absorbs more ink which means the ink can spread and cause loss of detail such as letters filling in when reversed out of large colours and it can also increase drying time for a job.

- Can also cause issues if you producing something that folds (ie, CD Digipack) - if the inks too dense it can crack on the fold...

I thought that when you convert from RGB to CMYK, the colour space to have set up corrects the Ink density on the fly. No
- Yup it does, the above shows how to change the ps defaults for making those calculations for different ink densities.ian

Change ink limit to 200 instead of 230.
