why do so many of you think that if html can do it then you should use that?
dev time on HTML is not shorter, QA is a nightmare. Flash can be indexed, we can do deep linking for bookmarking and as a designer you have to compromise a lot less on the graphics.

No, I'm serious. Maybe you think their site needs an animated nav or header of something. But ultimately it will come down to their individual need, there's no generic reason to use it.

kids like flash

video, cross platform content, and because josh davis does it.

I'm pretty sure I will never do a complete flash site ever again.

- The world caught on to Youtube which requires flash for flv playback - end user's will have Flash
- It's internal library is exceptionally robust allowing you to do anything dynamic you can pretty much think up these days - connect to databases, send and receive info... interact with filthy web-cammers etc etc
- It's smooth and clean in appearance - regardless of end-user OS, browser etc... the fonts, colors, pixel orientation etc will be duplicated
- It's much easier to manipulate / create 'exactly' what you want in flash - your control of pixels and all your browser real-estate is ridiculously 'easy'
- oh yeah... you can animate with it. :)----drawbacks----
- shitty on mobile devices
- depending on content and how you wish to end-users to load your files - files can be rather large in size

Isn't being able to embed fonts a big point in favor of Flash? I like being able to use different fonts, that actually show up.

Convincing argument: "With a Flash based site your company staff can have fancy profiles like these: http://www.inet-web.com/creative…

How about, "you can display objects that aren't rectangular?"
- :Pturk_182
- lol. thanks to css positioning and transparent pngs that fortunately not the case with html anymore.airey
- The objects are still rectangular. They just have circles drawn on them.boobs
- huh? you lost me?airey
- A circular image in CSS, is a rectangular image with a circle drawn on it, over a rectangular transparent background.boobs
- a transparent png is still a square... whereas shapes can be true circles (vectors) in flashturk_182
- Flash can make an object of any shape.boobs
- Consequently, Flash is the ideal tool for presenting boobs on the web.boobs

That your whole design team are print designers so you can only do flash.
OOOOOhhhhhh just kidding.

boobs - font embedding. you're spot on it's great but depending on the client and they're target audience you can get stuck. a did a job a while back that needed to be viewed by some large business and their IT department wouldn't update the flash plugin yet as they do the whole place in one rollout. problem was it was a few years or so old and the embedding didn't stick. just appeared blank.
obviously this isn't a common thing but you have to really be aware of what decisions you make and the ramifications.
typical of webdesign in my experience. 2 steps forward one back and three sideways. it's a fucking hotshoe shuffle some of the time!

Plus there are all the user tracking features Flash makes possible, and the ability to track the times of user interactions.
"How long did the guy have to watch it before he pressed buy?"

When I see a well done Flash, I get wood®
- Yes, we've already tracked that. It takes a long time compared to most blokes, but you do, in your own tiny way.boobs

- If I looked like that, I'd do every drug I could get my hands on.boobs

Yes, No, Right, Wrong, Black, White.... Come on guy's this question has grey written all over it. Flash is a very effective tool... when used correctly! So this is why I don't use it.
- ukit0
Boobs, you can flash anytime you want! You don't need a reason!

that google thing is amusing, who pastes all the text into flash these days anyway?

lots of good reason to flash, And I am all for flash when its right. But I think the main problem with it is its not very accessible, Adobe have worked hard to address that but its stil along way off the inherent accessibility of standard compliant HTML. So depending on your project and your Clients needs you may end up having to build two sites on in Flash one in HTML, hence doubling your work load.
Not to drone on, but also everyone goes on about Flash Players ubiquity, but that is only half the story. If you do a super fancy flash site and people still have Flash player 7, and work in large companies where they don't like you upgrading stuff, they are screwed. I used to have this problem all the time when I worked at a larger company, could use anything that wasn't built before 1999.
boobs sounds like you want to build a fab flash site for yourself and are trying to convince your clients to give you the money to do it, go on admit it. (its fair enough I do that all the time)

on one hand, you have amazon.com everyone knows it, it works.
then they also have http://www.windowshop.com. id be interested to see the sales stats from windowshop as it is a much nicer way to browse thru stuff. its like being in an actual bookstore, you can look at album covers, you can read the first few pages of a few books plus you can view trailers before getting that dvd.
the site loads fast (no loading autokern init), it will look the same on any browser or OS, browsing is easy and its all visual which is good since no one reads nowadays. id rather have that than awkwardly big headlines to attract my attention and force me to read something that someone thought was important for me.
it takes you to an html page when you buy something of course but before that, you had a different shopping experience online.
this is something flash can do for your company.
- Do people actually like windowshop as a user exprience? Personally I find it very disorintating?harmsie
