but where are your searching and sorting filters? where does this page pull related and featured products? how does amazon push particular price points and offers to customers? where are the conventions of e-comm which make people feel safe shopping? where do you put banners for advertising, and how would you incorporate them quickly and easily? why am I being forced to browse in this linear way? etc etc etc etc

its not meant to be the entire shop, its the stuff you see outside on display. its the bestsellers, new stuff and recommendations. if you want to search for specific titles, step inside the store which is the main site. the main site still there behind all of it, windowshop is just the storefront. granted its not perfect but it does its job to show you what they have at a glance which is heaps better than having a long page with too much clutter and banners all competing for your attention.
- I find it very annoying as an at a glance shopfront, a layer of pointless puffkelpie

Once again we stray from what is actually important. The technology platform is irrelevant, it's the design of the product you should focus your attention on. Are you communicating the intended messaging to the client's audience? Are you elevating the brand?
The vehicle to get there shouldn't matter, as long as you know how to drive the vehicle in a responsible manner.
Focus on D-E-S-I-G-N, and forget about "Flash", or "CSS". The path should be clear—if Flash helps that path, use it. If it does not, as mentioned above, don't...

As a flash developer... Flash for experience or media delivery. Never build a whole site in Flash just because you can.
