Global warning.

i think a point that would be awesome if we could make it would be simply the health issue.
regardless if the planet is warming or not, the toxins released by automobiles, kills. carbon monoxide poisoning anyone? The chemicals released by kodak and other film development chemical manufacturers seep into soil and contaminate water supplies supplied that we then consume.
These animal foodstuffs become infused with carcinogens regardless of our intent to consume them. Soon i believe it will be near impossible to manufacture or produce any truly naturally healthy even "organic" foodstuffs. If the soil and water itself are contaminated, how can our caloric intake not in turn be infected as well?

I guess it was about time to have this discussion. teleos, I'm assuming you spend a lot of time here since you always seem to pop in for these discussions, so do you spend months waiting for a global warming or evolution thread to pop up, or do you have another username or what?

Talking about this with my finance today about "deniers" and "believers" - my take is in the irony of the moment is that the world is in such a way that even if there is no such thing about global warming making the correct stance will improve things no end.I do get this sort of conspiracy to usher in something terrible, were we are in this point ant time and the lies exposed this has to be taken in as a possible.
Even the most hardened cynic must now admit that said cooperation are making beyond a healthy credit and they have not the best interests in humanity. Good summary here:

Whilst we argue about left and right both changing can help fix so much. So many of these issues can be improved/vapurated by avoiding giving money to these psychopathic cunts.
Stop buying anything that cuts down a rain forest, yes that means the the dairy/meat industry as its fucking barbaric, avoid plastics when necessary cause we don't need more shit, try going zero waste, make sure you stop buying clothes/items that were slave made. Go get second hand items, build communities, make sure Gardener has his vinyls, fucking smile and be kind to your fellow man/women etc. Stop putting faith in politics its a fucking joke left and right.
Something big is about to happen, 1000 meter waves or alien over lords or a Orwellian society but by being a fucking human being, we can get through this. Not ranting I promise, just my thinking - we all are arguing for one right belief/answer but the joke is everyone has a belief system and its the most incredible thing (yes some people think the world is flat and yes that is silly) but it makes us whom we are as a whole and the interactions with people that make it interesting. Shit we have Terry Pratchett cause of this. Look at his influences. Tolkien the same. Winnie the fucking pooh, one man watching his kid play with teddies and is include in Buddhist texts and look at the positive effects for mental health exposure. All these people were being honest with their emotions.
The irony being we all are educated to think we should achieve only one 'correct one view' instead of accepting a million interesting slightly wonky ones.
Example I love the Corbett report, do I think he is a messiah, no. Right about everything no, right about some areas, spot on.Yes this whole global warming thing might be fake, no it probably isn't - maybe its going to be okay - but until we all start fucking growing up and taking serious actions right or wrong we are fucked regardless.
If we are in a sinking ship how are you going to look into our kids eyes and tell them what you did in this moment.
Then again I'm a just a goth anarchist from Watford!
And I promise this block of black test isn't a rant.

Humans suck even worse than we thought, study finds
If you’re a human — and if you’re not, how are you reading this? — you’ve probably come to terms with the fact that you’re part of the problem. Earth is headed toward a cliff and the overwhelming majority of very smart people who study our planet say it’s because we can’t stop messing things up. We fill the oceans with plastics, burn old dinosaurs to keep our houses warm and our cars moving, and change the landscape of entire continents, all while pretending our actions will be without consequences. Sigh.
While a lot of research has gone into revealing how dramatically we have messed the planet up with things like fossil fuel and pollution, new research suggests that our more recent habits are only a portion of the problem. Humans, it seems, have been severely stressing Earth out for up to 4,600 years, and perhaps even longer. The work, which was published this week in the journal Science, links dramatic changes in Earth’s vegetation with the same window of time in which human agriculture exploded.

sorry, to be more accurate i meant the rate of growth won't be the same.

My position on climate change has slightly evolved over the past few years, but I still don't think we can be flippant (/hubristic) enough to be un/sure of the science enough to NOT do anything about it.
*IF* we can pull smart nuclear out of the bag (focus on Thorium) AND we can deploy it in earnest worldwide, to every nation regardless of political leaning, and IF we can deliver a [really] huge amount of desalination plants, we can effectively engineer out our dry spots (Google 'dustbowlification') and at the same time capitalise on the extra land we'll gain nearer the poles.
We're amidst the greatest gamble any species on our planet has ever entered, and IF it pays off, we can spin global warming into a truly positive thing = more available landmass.
The flipside, however, if we continue to pretend that it cannot possibly be a concern, is that we don't evolve beyond a carbon-as-fuel economy, we don't 'geoengineer' the failpoints (deserts etc) whilst we do run out of easy energy, we do run out of food and migration and resource challenges bring down all the major economies... though if it goes that way, there are still plenty of nukes around, so maybe we'll just blow the shit out of each other instead.

i found the recent changes in the US Chamber of Commerce interesting.
Companies such as Apple, GE and other leaving the chamber because of its foot-dragging on climate action.
"Two weeks ago, the largest electric utility company Exelon did not renew its membership of the Chamber, announcing that "inaction on climate is not an option".
This week, New York Times and Washington Post featured full-page ads from big companies and environmentalists calling upon the US Senate to "pass clean energy legislation with a cap on greenhouse gas emissions this year."
The ads were signed by, among others, Dow, Exelon, United Technologies, Duke Energy, GE, Weyerhauser, Constellation Energy, Interface, PSEG, Deutsche Bank, Entergy, Johnson Controls and NRG."
