Teleos. In my opinion the growth of religion matches the social patters of economic and cultural decline. As evident as obesity in for example the american culture is mainly a problem among the poor people that cant afford to buy healthy food. Religion follows the same patterns of cultural and social decline where people clung to the old ways, to security and to otherworldy things to explain things they simply dont have the mindset, the background or the will to leave to themselves to understand. This is the way i see it, very much caused by how each and every countries culture is built and works. The smaller northern hemisphere european economies with higher average educational levels as well as other similar factors does not suffer as much religious diversions as say the USA. This i believe, and it is yet my opinion and interpretation of the facts at hand comes from a great personal security, a more diverse schooling system and a much more open society. And of course close to no christian imigrant minority such as the afro-american and the hispanic USA has.

I had a very interesting conversation with a friend who is 3 years into a 4 year theology degree in the pub the other night. As a PhD candidate, it was fun discussing ontology and epistemology from the perspective of theology.....

then there was the dancing on tables...

    • seriously... :)lowimpakt
    • ew... dead religion vs. alive in Christ kinda thing, it sounds like. :(teleos
  • teleos0

Ya see... we are hardwired by our creator to seek him. Now, we may choose to try and fill that void with the temporal and fleeting things of this world, but it persists... and it gnaws at us. So, Erik, please don't hold your breath. As long as there are humans, there will be the quest for ultimate purpose beyond what we can see and touch here.

  • teleos0

Erik - It might behoove you to look at the latest statistics. The major religions are growing substantially and show no sign of stopping. Voltaire said that within 100 years of his lifetime, Christianity would be gone from the earth. 50 years after his death, his house was used as a Bible Printing Society. LOL, the irony.

    • ha, nice. :Dgramme
    • Too bad it's not true.Mimio
    • There is debate as to the particulars as to when and what society used his house.teleos

of course not all people who follow their chosen brand of religion is crazy, but there are some pretty incredible cases. for instance:

    • There are some wacky atheists too. Beware of the Genetic Fallacy.teleos

religious people are always good fun. however you choose to look at it. but mass-religion like Christianity etc will hopefully be gone soon enough. hopefully in my lifetime

    • Only because the xtians are going to be raptured up and we'll be left with the false religion of the anti-christ.Mimio
    • or not.Mimio
    • oh the caricatures and marginalization. I suppose it helps you sleep better though.teleos
    • No rapture for you then, huh teleos?Mimio

for Janne: here is the entire parable, in the English Standard Translation.

"Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect."

Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?" And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

"I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

This is a tired old attack on the Bible, it's a ridiculous claim.

Where there is no way to prove some of the supernatural claims in the Bible, it is the most substantiated book of all time in terms of historical and archeological evidence. Also, in some cases you have over 1,000 year gaps of time in found biblical manuscripts with literally no differences between them...or the only differences being the way certain words were spelled...but not in meaning.

There are over 25,000 ancient manuscripts discovered and archived so far, at least 5,600 of which are copies and fragments in the original Greek text. Some of these manuscript texts date to as early as 40-60 years after the original text were written.

So of these 25,000 manuscripts we have, and only minor differences existing between them (and even then, never differences in meaning) I don't see how this claim can be made.

There is literally no ground to stand on with this claim when based on all the available information. Afterall, what are they comparing the texts we have available too to say it has been changed? How could you make this claim unless you had the original Bible? Again, all the evidence available says the contrary.

The Bible is an awesome book- I've been podcasting it for the last 3 months, heh, cause it's a bit dense for me to read. It's amazing how much time and energy some atheists (and now apparently the Religulous PR team) put into dissing it. Eh, doesn't bother me too much, I'm on my own thing.

You all will burn in hell tho.

"The nearly complete Codex Vaticanus is the oldest, dated c. AD 325–50.7 Codex Alexandrinus contains the whole Old Testament and a nearly complete New Testament and dates from the late fourth century to the early fifth century."

This brief article might help people get some perspective on how the whole textual criticism thing works:
    http://www.equip.org/site/c.muI1…

I'm trying to understand why the Guardian article is making news. Must have something to do with the new Bill Maher theophobia film.

    • So was the Vaticanus compiled on the heels of the Nicaean Council?gramme
  • gramme0

Nowhere did that article say the Bible is bullshit. They even mentioned, far down in the article, that they could (my paraphrase) be mistaken about which version of the Bible came first.

If God exists, and if he is who he says he is, then he wouldn't confuse us with a mountain of garbled, poorly translated "Scriptures".

    • Right, he'd just hand deliver it to each of us. Like the Yellow pages.Mimio
    • No, he'd make it abundantly easy to access for anyone with a 4th grade+ reading level.gramme
    • Which he's already done.gramme
    • We should get the opinions of 4th graders on this matter then?Mimio
    • granted there are some parts which are difficult to understand, but the parts that are vital to the faith are quite clear.gramme
    • clear.gramme
    • Don't be daft, just making a point about accessibility after the Yellow Pages comment.gramme

The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. - Luke 12:46

    • you should paste in the rest of that parable, it's a good one, and makes more sense when not pulled out of context.gramme
    • nice, that bible of you fear mongerers.janne76
  • lowimpakt0

just because the bible is bullshit doesn't mean god doesn't exist.

  • janne760

    Interesting article though. Thanks, 5timuli.

    • I found it interesting. I don't follow this stuff as closely as others, judging from the responses to it.5timuli
