I'm trying to convince him that he needs to get it right and not pay some 14yo hack to do some piece of shit (again). I'm having trouble wording it right though. Does anyone know of any prominent designers who've written articles on this kind of thing (i.e. how important it is to have a well designed logo/identity)?

I don't know if anyone has said this but the price of the logo is determined on the use. If this logo will seen national on tv, websites, the full spectrum you charge one thing. but if the logo will just be seen in newspaper ad's and local sport mags then your price would be less. I think you need the graphic design guild.

Well the company is small (less than 10 employees including freelancers) but they run thousands of eBay ticket auctions daily and charge people out the ass for them (sports, music, theater events). That's why I'm charging $3k. Not a lot really.
I'm just trying to justify what I'm charging and it's a nightmare. Would the GAG book help me work out if I was being fair?
Here's part of what I've written:
"For the logo I'd normally charge a minimum fee of $3,000. That price includes 2-3 initial concepts, 2-3 sets of design revisions, plus the final suite of logos supplied in different color formats (PMS, CMYK, MONO) and file formats (AI, EPS, JPEG, TIFF, etc.). Usually this whole process takes at least 30-40 hours. Your logo should be the most important part of your brand identity for years to come and it's important to get it right early on so you can concentrate on building brand recognition."
I think the 'brand recognition' line is a bit bullshitty and probably needs reworded. But I'm close to saying "fuck it" and hitting 'send'.

Might be a good idea to highlight the business side of what you are going to do - study of the marketplace, analysis of competitors. It's more than just knocking out a design.

figure out what your hourly rate is (including the 2-3 hours per day that are non-billable). work out how many hours it will take - include phone calls, meetings, emails EVERYTHING! and viola!
It is very important to work with him on HIS budget and requirements. You do not charge based on how much money a client has (although it will allow it to effect the budget if it required).
Does he need implementation - stationary, biz cards, style guide, signage etc? All these change if it will be a budget $1500 logo or a $10,000 logo. This and what size the corporation is - look at the AIGA's guide to ethical pricing.

Think about it. Are they paying you just for your time? Or your brains, experience, study, learning, eye, talent etc etc etc?
How much do you think your worth? What have your previous bosses been charging, and do you think you are better than them?
Charge whatever you can get, it's a free world. Just not free in that way ;)

Develop your own ID & Logo (preferably worth $10K+)
and then use this as a reference to justify the $3K quote for their logoOnce they see your $10K logo, they'll want to pay you more, like $moreK ....

It all depends on the size of the client and the usage of the logo. If its a small-ish company and they only need a logo for some stationary etc then you can't really justify charging a lot. If the logo is going be seen nationwide or even internationally and is a big part of the company's image you can charge more – it's called usage rights.
