How do you justify, say, charging a client $3k for a simple logo? I have a client who has money coming out his ears at the moment but I'm swaying on the thought of charging him $3k, especially since his logo is shit right now and probably cost him next to nothing. He's a family friend but he makes a fortune from event tickets. I might end up doing his website too, plus a load of eBay crap so I don't want to scare him off right at the start.
In my experience, the average logo for me has taken a minimum of 20-30 hours, usually more after research, initial ideas, development, etc.
I read another thread on QBN where someone said they never charge less that $5k for a logo. Do you do the same? How do you justify it to the client, or do you even have to?

i charged a client 6k for a logo and business card once
man, that was awesome

work it out based on your hourly rate and how long you think it'll take you to do it
then, raise your rate every time you get slammed with work
over time you can justifiably charge more

Imagine you are David Carson.

Tell him you'll give him a family discount and you'll do it for 5k.

Do a fricking awesome job, and 3grand is a bargain, isnt it ?
3 grand really isnt a lot money, get used to charging and thinking in at least this much. If someone isn't prepared to think like you, then really you're not the right guy for them.

I worked it out, playing it safe, and that's how I came out with $3k. Just seems a lot to me as I've not done a lot of freelance and I don't want to scare him off. But then again I don't want to be screwed either.
- yeah leave the screwing to that other wifey in the family that whores you for help.Jnr_Madison
- She does work for him, hahaha.5timuli

I know deep down inside I'm being a pussy and should just fucking do it.

3k is ok if you are going to be doing a full identity, stationery and style guide. if it's just a logo to use on a card and flyers etc i reckon it's a bit steep.
- Fuck no, I'd never do all that for $3k.5timuli
- Maybe logo & stationery if it was simple enough.5timuli
- thats more like what i meant. it all depends on your client.forcetwelve

I mean, the guy went to the bank the other day and withdrew $10k three times to buy tickets, then sold them all at a profit. He's not short of cash.

So does anyone have any tips on handling a client if they shit themselves at the quote price?
- yeah, don't care about it
especially in front of himscarabin_net

30 hours for 3k after taxes is about $65 an hour. that is not a shitload. double it. at least.

what i find is that people that have $ have them usually out of good business sense - and if you try and screw him he'll probably suss you out and go cold. just be honest and charge what you think is reasonable.
- ukit0
Yea, 3k doesn't seem excessive. Charging a shitload thread should be more ambitious.
50k for a logo
200k for a websiteAnd so on...
- 200 k for a website is pretty standard... if you're an agency that iswordsinyourmouth

for the longest time i had a habit of low-balling (ahem) people out of fear that i'd scare them off, but i'd always end up screwing myself in the end. now, i tell them price, if they balk i promptly say thanks, good luck, and goodbye. more often than not they call back.
- ukit0
I go by the philosophy that people feel better about things they pay more for.
- nocomply0
that's one of the reasons why i don't do logos. to the uneducated client it probably does seem like a shit load for not a lot of work.
if i had to do a logo, i would sell it as more than just a logo. you're going to spend time doing market research, coming up with several variations, potentially dealing with printing companies, etc...
be sure to let them know what's involved when you give your quote.
ps - i would be stoked to be paid 3K to do a logo.
- no you wouldn't - cause you don't do them.forcetwelve
