When The Music Stops – How America’s Cities May Explode In Violence
We have seen them all before, and we shall see them all again as history rhymes along regardless of the century or the generation of humankind nominally in control of events. But the next time we are visited by widespread, large-scale urban riots, a dangerous new escalation may be triggered by a new vulnerability: It’s estimated that the average American home has less than two weeks of food on hand. In poor minority areas, it may be much less. What if a cascading economic crisis, even a temporary one, leads to millions of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards flashing nothing but zeroes? Or if the government’s refusal to reimburse them causes supermarket chains to stop accepting them for payment? The government can order the supermarkets to honor the cards, but history’s verdict is clear: If suppliers are paid only with worthless scrip or blinking digits, the food will stop.
STEP ONE: FLASH MOB LOOTING
In my scenario, the initial riots begin spontaneously across affected urban areas, as SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program) and other government welfare recipients learn that their EBT cards no longer function. This sudden revelation will cause widespread anger, which will quickly lead to the flash-mob looting of local supermarkets and other businesses. The media will initially portray these “food riots” as at least partly justifiable. Sadly, millions of Americans have been made largely, or even entirely, dependent on government wealth transfer payments to put food on their tables.
A new social contract has been created, where bread and circuses buy a measure of peace in our minority-populated urban zones. In the era of ubiquitous big-screen cable television, the internet and smart phones, the circus part of the equation is never in doubt as long as the electricity flows. But the bread is highly problematic. Food must be delivered the old-fashioned way: physically. Any disruption in the normal functioning of the EBT system will lead to food riots with a speed that is astonishing. This will inevitably happen when our unsustainable, debt-fueled binge party finally stops, and the music is over. Now that the delivery of free or heavily subsidized food is perceived by tens of millions of Americans to be a basic human right, the cutoff of “their” food money will cause an immediate explosion of rage. When the hunger begins to bite, supermarkets, shops and restaurants will be looted, and initially the media will not condemn the looting. Unfortunately, this initial violence will only be the start of a dangerous escalation.

Elizabeth Warren is amazing (God, I hope she wins in my state!) and Bill Clinton has not lost his groove.
- Scott Brown's really popular, not sure about that one... Deval could be a good challengerGreedo
- Yeah, I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about Brown but Warren just seems smarter.monkeyshine

Clinton's speech was really great. Not much at first glance for the Republicans to dispute. Even if it sickens them, they'd be foolish to criticize a president with the success that he had.
- Yeah besides the fact that the Dems front man screwed his intern. Stay classy dems.whhipp
- yup, republicans never had ANY sex scandals. no, never. especially not of the closeted gay variety.Greedo
- i cant think of anything big he did. and that is why i think he was successful. the sex stuff, not relevant to me.********
- or as futurama says http://www.youtube.c…********
- mayeb all president should have an intern on the side to worry bout than monument building with shit laws and wars********
- that just shows you how great he was. not only was he very successful, he also got his dick sucked in office and no one really cares anymoresine
- really cares anymoresine
- Clinton is good speaker not much past words. so same crap.yurimon
- yeah... standard. wouldn't expect anything less.whhipp
- his sex life has no logical impact on his ability to be president, and focusing on that is typical republican idiocymonospaced
- ernexbcn0
Clinton was a great president, it's a shame he got punished politically by the sex scandal.
- but what made him great? hes seems to be good to me but cant pinpoint why********
- http://i46.tinypic.c…drgs
- was it because he signed NAFTA?74LEO
- Nope, it was the results of Reagan and Bush policies set in place before him.whhipp
- See, everything good is ALWAYS a product of republicans. At least according to them.aaux
- Reagan = Reason for .com boomaaux
- so help me understand... if success of Clinton is because of Reagan and Bush 1... Then Obama's failure would be becausebulletfactory
- because of Bush 2 - at least by your rationale. correct?bulletfactory
- dang drgs if that graph proves clinton good, than it proves fdr and obama as pretty terrible********
- im not defending obamadrgs
- and certainly not defending republicans, which are even worse garbage, I just hate US in generaldrgs
- Heh, republicans using an actual rationale, good oneaaux
- but what made him great? hes seems to be good to me but cant pinpoint why

Clinton was really great last night. I dont think ive ever seen him seem so passionate and alive during a speech. What I like about him is he is just straight to the point, fix problems the most logical way. He isnt like a typical politician pointing fingers for no reason just to help the democratic party get ahead, he comes with facts and solutions.
Its really just a shame about that whole sex scandal thing, but he was still a great president. Things were pretty solid for those 8 years until Bush took office and in just 8 years he tore down everything Clinton built up.
But whats up with his hands shaking? Looks like he might have Parkinsons, or was that already known?
- i didn't see the shaking hands, but noticed him swaying side-to-side and thought the same thing. i really hope he's okscruffics
- It's not Parkinsons. It's called charisma.mg33
- No he definitely had major hand shaking going on. Looks like early stage of Parkinson's. We know it wasnt nerves.CygnusZero4
- He's been giving speeches for decades. I think he is sick.CygnusZero4
- There's a crap load of medications where tremors are a side effect. Not necessarily parkinsons.aaux
- CygnusZero40
And for me the best part was when he pointed out the same thing Ive been saying about Obama, not president in the history of this country could be handed a mess like this and fix it in 1 term. Every time a depression roles around it takes multiple terms and sometimes multiple presidents to completely fix everything.
All you can do in 4 years is just start to get things moving forward, and Obama has done that. You cant ask for much more, and he deserves a 2nd term to push it further along. There really is no good reason to replace him right now.
But the repubs just make up all kinds of lies just to satisfy their thirst for power while all Clinton and Obama do is come with facts and solutions to problems that make good old fashioned sense. Im bipartisan and dont choose sides and point fingers, I vote for whoever seems like they can get the job done, and sorry just not enough reasons to do a 180 right now when there is progress in plenty of areas.
- Exactly. I think that was very well said by him.mg33
- Yes I was very relieved when he brought that up because Ive been saying it for months.CygnusZero4

Ok looks like this has been going on for years with his hands. I really noticed both thumbs shaking uncontrollably but saw all fingers shaking too. It's pretty subtle but I kept noticing it last night.

"Clinton's claim that debt quadrupled under Reagan/Bush (1981-1993) appears to be right. Oct. 1, 1980: $907 billion. Oct. 92: $4.1 trillion"
- BrokenHD0
I heard today's soundbites from the right after last night's Clinton speech and it seems all they are doing, besides not responding directly to it, is doubling down on their vague "Obama has failed" message/massage. Its an attempt to drag a huge net across the seabed, hauling up as many uninformed voters out of the mud as possible. Will it work? Are republicans watching the DNC? Did they listen to Clinton's and Michelle's speeches? Are they not moved to at least investigate the claims and promises made by their candidates? hmm
- IMPOSSIBRURamanisky2
- its a load of bull both side of coin suck. They claim different things but if you notice their over all policy hasnt changed since bush. so what does that tell you?yurimon
- CygnusZero40
@broken, this is what happens every election. Literally just blatant lies in a quest for power. It's awful. What I noticed about Clinton when he ran and Obama they did nothing but come with facts and solutions, and both of them were elected.
Clinton was a rock solid president aside from the Lewinsky shit, and Obama has STARTED to push things in the right direction, which means he's earned another term. I'm pretty sure he will win.
- CygnusZero40
Its amazing Romney can run ads that are just complete lies hoping the average American citizen will just buy it and not follow up on them to see if they are true, but Clinton just shoved all of that up their asses.
- News Flash. Its all Lies. Obama, Romney. Load of shyt. Clinton is a great liar too. Politics is not reality. FYIyurimon
- mg330
Ha! Holy fuck... was just wasting some time reading comments on Romney's Facebook. Somebody tried to blame all this on Clinton by "not taking out Bin Laden when we had the chance, which would have prevented 9/11 from happening."
