I think it's really obtuse of this person to say that freedom of speech is too expensive, how about we cut her job? Wouldn't having no public safety be cheaper? This kind of short term thinking is the reason why we're in trouble. If they can't protest then we might as well give up on democracy.
- Also seems like a huge exaggeration to say that schools will be shut down.ukit
- actually its not, NYC has a very fragile budget at the moment.********

The only thing thats costing them a lot of money is their handling of the situation. Shutting down schools?! OMG that is ludicrous, they just got a 5 million dollar donation.
- I wonder how much all those crimeless arrests cost.********

For any corporation to donate that much of money, it usually takes much longer time to actually make it happen. I would assume that they were long before but I could be wrong.
In any case, this donation will help reduce cost by the city in turn NYC residents pay.
Due to cut backs, there are already talks of closing schools, firehouses and layoffs at NYPD. This will only fuel that process. Blame the protest and win with the public.
$5 million in annual budget of $3.9 Billion isnt really anything.
- schools and firehouse closure was already on the potential list for cut backs before this.********

One thing some of you forget is that the location of protest is a private land yet at the urging of the NYPD, they let them stay.

Hmm, this is interesting...JP Morgan Chase just purchased a $4.6M share of the NYPD. Wait, the NYPD isn't a publicly traded company. Oh, right, it was a "donation". Anyway:

^^ "On Tuesday last week someone hacked into and shut down my Web Site, which had been receiving thousands of page hits a day. It was frightening and surprising, though in retrospect I should have anticipated it. As with the police brutality, I had previously been familiar with the government’s abuse of surveillance power in the aftermath of 9/11. The Patriot Act allows them to spy on us and do what they like with full impunity. And the surveillance state, much like the military apparatus, is dominated by private, mercenary corporate contractors. But it’s one thing to read about someone else’s brush up with the police state; it’s another to experience it yourself."

Why was VelocityFade's account deleted as well? He commented on something I was saying in the Occupy Wallstreet thread, chit chatted with JSK, then disappeared. Seems weird.

I hate to peddle Frontline again but .. this one is a great one to watch.
It talks about how our secret operations has grown so much yet it lacks real tangible results. Under the banners of Patriot Act, government contractors and consultant hit a jack pot.
It maybe that they can't share full effectiveness of the system, without any checks and balances, it is a biggest cash cow. Increase in size of this continues to grow as Obama doesnt want to risk national security even though death of Bin Ladin came from human intelligence and good old detective work.

Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan, who helped fund the Obama campaign now seems to be backing Romney
- ********0
Most of Wall St backed Obama when he got elected.
The relationship soured when Obama blamed the banks.
Now Obama is trying to get the Wall St back. He is in NYC for Wall St fund raising event more frequently now.

8,074 MTA employees earned $100,000 last year. Fifty MTA employees earned more than $200,000 last year. And salaries are rising.

I think it's fair to point to overpaid public employees in some parts of the country...NYC...California... they are not helping the deficit crisis. The problem has more to do with pensions than salary.
But this is a distraction from the larger income inequality issue. When 1% own almost half the wealth. That has nothing to do with the salary of a few thousand transit employees.
- Yes, at times union power can be leveraged to an extreme degree. Conversely, if unions didn't exist, there'd be an absurd amount of power in the hands of the corporate overlords. Some sort of balance is what's needed. Who can argue with that?Kiino

@JSK from previous page re: JPMorganChase donation to NYPD
"$5 million in annual budget of $3.9 Billion isnt really anything."
Numerical figures can both illuminate and obfuscate a narrative. Sure, on one hand as you frame it, $5m is a tiny fraction of the total NYPD budget. On the flipside, what does that money guarantee.
For example, say a mother in Crown Heights calls the police commissioner to ask for more patrols because of gang activity in her neighborhood and Jamie Dimon calls the commissioner to complain of some protestors on his block. Which call will Kelly pick up and which call will get routed to a bored desk sergeant who will promise to "look into it".
Also having private individuals or corporations having a public service like a police department beholden to them bodes ill for democracy. They are public servants and their money should come from public coffers - otherwise, well...
- Not an example but rather speculation based on meaning narrative only to cause friction.********
