heres something to think about. especially if you were in the top 10 percent and what you felt was a fair progressive rate. im curious if you would really act differently with tax right offs and legal ways to save what you earned. And yes the article doesnt paint the whole tax story, but more so then your typical bias media outlets that say either less taxes are good or private enterprise and profit is bad. might give a little better perspective.

"As you can see, the top earning 1 percent of Americans (or 1.4 million returns making more than $380,000) paid 38 percent of federal personal income taxes. However, they made only 20 percent of income. The top 5 percent of income earners pay almost 60 percent of income taxes and make almost 35 percent of all personal income. The Americans at the lower half of the income spectrum (or 70 million returns) paid 2.7 percent of the total. This chart also shows that roughly half of taxpayers pay for almost all of the federal personal income taxes.

It means that the income tax in America is extremely progressive."

    • and not to say i dont see the reason for progressive tax. but i can objectively define a true rate or what is right.

The thing is when Bush and the Republicans passed their tax cuts back in 2001, they specifically set them to expire in about a decade because they knew the long term finances would look terrible. Now it seems like everyone has shifted to a mentality that we can't possibly let them expire.

No one wants to pay more taxes, if it was an ideal world the tax rate would be zero and we would get everything for free. But at this point where the country is going broke, I say just let them expire like they were originally supposed to. That would solve a huge part of their deficit crisis everyone is talking about.

    • Let the rates go back to 90s levels, the economy did alright back then if I remember correctlyukit

Im not in the gray on the taxes area. I personally don't mind since i wont really be effected. However if i was rich taking a loss id try to hedge it by changing up the labor sources i use. It could likely initially hurt job growth in areas, all the while keeping GDP pretty much the same. It will have both negative and positive consequences until it finds a balance. Always the problem when economics is controlled through decisions besides market forces. And i dont think the change would be that drastic or much of a wreck before its settled. And still i cant say what is a "right" progessive rate with all the tax laws and roundy rounds. And im curious too who can. Its just a larger understanding instead of focusing on the idea GE didnt pay taxes and so republicans are bad. Like GE cares theyll jsut get more subsidies for BS green tech and loss writeoffs if dems win. I blame companies and politcians far less then the masses of idiots who stay within party playbooks and jsut except it as thats what you have to do. I mean come on trump is running for president. Is shit really getting better? Somethign is wrong because people are so obsessed with being spoonfed the same party nonsense that is no different with who wins.

Im likely alright with 90 levels. But if war keeps up and market manipulation and increased welfare type (better word but cant think of it that media uses) stuff. well it wont really matter.

    • or i am in gray area... but im ok with either. bigger fish to fry.

I think you have to look at this through the lens of the country being $14 trillion in debt. Someone is going to have to pay that $14 trillion off. I have no doubt there will eventually be cuts to Social Security, Medicare, etc since both parties are talking about it. Either it happens under Obama and we see reasonable cuts or a Republican gets elected and we see absolutely brutal cuts, complete privatization of Social Security, etc...

The question is whether the rich also do their part by paying higher tax rates - or rather, letting the temporary tax cuts expire as they were intended to.

You can really see which way the debate is tilted by the fact that both parties endorse benefit cuts, while only Democrats are willing to consider letting the tax cuts lapse, which just seems like sane policy to me even if you are a fiscal conservative.

    • To whom do 'we' owe this $14T ?
Fuck them, they can't have it back ; we're more important.

if a republican wins there wont be drastic cuts. if he wins he needs to look at his possible re-election. Thye'll play it safe the same way the other party would. They'll probably talk bigger though. After all how will any voter feel when cuts effects them.

I have really no solutions as far as law is concerned to fix a single problem without creating ten more. My only solution is to get peopel to be less selfish and greedy by helping them to understand medicare/SS philosophies and that the entitlements arent rights. Which side looks more guilty declaring that other should provide for them their needs, and the greedy corporations wanting to hold on to the money they earned (even if it was through lobbying and legal loopholes they created). Whne everyone wants the unearned and calls it a right.. except business is closer cuase they worked for it in shady ways... will the political spectrum really change. It will go slightly one party direction back and forth while it all slips away. All i can say is better edcuation not on party lines but philosophy. Work from foundation up to get better results through a more educated populace then the voted in politcians with rules and regualtions that do nothing. Thats all i got. No idea how to go about it when peopel are so party blinded these days. Have to start with a new generation and hope something levels out in a century. No quick fixes. And then there are the variables of the global economy. .... i got nothing for that... maybe have to get a one world order in place to progress farther then we are. Maybe we're still running the playbooks of a millenia ago. Just larger tribes. Always depressing looking at it and am happy i dont vote. Sucks when there is no easy answer...

"if a republican wins there wont be drastic cuts"

Yeah except they have already spelled out what they want to do (Paul Ryan's budget plan) and it was passed by the Republican house. It privatizes Medicare and makes dramatic cuts to Medicaid and SS while cutting the top tax rate to 25%. Because what the country needs most when it is broke is to give the rich another tax break on top of the Bush tax cuts, lolz.

Of course they exempt current retirees from any of these privatization plans, instead of all of this will be falling on the backs of people like us in our 30s and 40s. We will have far less assistance to count on than any previous generation when we retire, despite paying into these programs just like everyone else if the GOP plan goes through.

That's really what it's down to. Extra money for you when you retire vs. tax cuts for the rich. But I guess libertarians will happily hand over their retirement money in order to stay true to their purist philosophy about government, which of course was invented by think tanks funded by rich people. You gotta laugh at some point.

I seem to recall reading about Trump's plan to wipe America's debt...something along the lines of a 15% one off tax on those worth $10 million or more. I'm sure that would go down well with the GOP - LOL

    What a knob.

I wouldnt say those who paid in should be cut out. Id suggest scaling back rationally but you would need a educated populace less focused on what others have and what they really paid in. Im ok planning for my future or preishing by lack of planning. I may not get what others have gotten before me. But That seems more fair then more stress on the back of my children.

And look at obama. he had soem big plans that all end up middle of the road slight adjustments. his healthcare bill is still up in the air. its a bad idea in my opinion but it will likely be water downed to nothign more then a increase in medicare or medicare be absorb by it to fund it as a plan won.

Its really about votes. And continued work+power. All you have to do is cater to the whims of the side you think has more votes you can sway. And try to not piss off the populace with fancy words and round about explanation that make no sense but have the same political speech of. "you are getting something out of this, or being defended against an absurd fear." cater to fear and handouts. Nothing has changed.

Is the presidetn or any senator below him any different then you who will try to fight to keep what you have. Will you have the integrity to do whats right knowing its against popular opinion. Even if it is right and the popular opinion just doesnt understand? If keeping integrity and going against popular party views makes you a libertarian, is that really that bad?

And as far as libertarian philosophy being finded by think tanks i think youre wrong. But it could be true in the way you look at it. I personally look at many different philosophies in different subjects and dont prescribe to any single one. And much of the philosophy is from socrates, antithenes, diogenes, not so much from plato. and so many others through religious facets and time. Perhaps their is a libertarian type conservative movement your thinking of and im sure there is that niche. But try not to take all those outside the 2 partyies with middle beliefs as those think tank cronies.

    • Yea not many peopel have much integrity these days. they just make comparisons of tohers to jsutify their decisions
