deathboy correctly reiterated the need to break the direct link between the Tucson shootings and Sarah Palin's gunsight Congressional map (even though Palin removed it from her Facebook page). He suggested that Palin did not pull the trigger, and thus she should not be held responsible.

I have to ask then, what would one say to Glenn Beck if one of the many death threats that 78 year-old professor Frances Piven has been receiving for months comes is carried out? For those not familiar with the story, please see below:

Spotlight From Glenn Beck Brings a CUNY Professor Threats
    By BRIAN STELTER
    Published: January 21, 2011
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/2…

On his daily radio and television shows, Glenn Beck has elevated once-obscure conservative thinkers onto best-seller lists. Recently, he has elevated a 78-year-old liberal academic to celebrity of a different sort, in a way that some say is endangering her life.

And while Bill O'Reilly did not pull the trigger the day that abortion doctor George Tiller was murdered in a church in 2009, would the fact that he was discussed for 28 days on O'Reilly's show before Tiller's death have anything to do with it?

Yes, we have freedom of speech in this country, and it's a wonderful thing. But that freedom does not allow people to call in bomb threats or yell "fire" in a crowded theater. What irks me a bit is the fact that pundits on all sides seem to think that their very loud, pervasive voices have no impact, and that people who are criminally insane and harboring violent tendncies are not inspired by the things people say.

Connecting the dots does not mean that people are responsible for harm. And what happened in Tucson does not mean that Palin should be brought up on charges.

But what if it was discovered that Jared Laughner was a huge fan of Palin's and in his twisted mind, took her gunsight map as a direct order?

I'm glad we have judges to uphold the law...oh wait a minute

LA Times: Clarence Thomas failed to report wife's income, watchdog says: http://www.latimes.com/news/nati…

"Between 2003 and 2007, Virginia Thomas, a longtime conservative activist, earned $686,589 from the Heritage Foundation, according to a Common Cause review of the foundation's IRS records. Thomas failed to note the income in his Supreme Court financial disclosure forms for those years, instead checking a box labeled "none" where "spousal noninvestment income" would be disclosed."

"Federal judges are bound by law to disclose the source of spousal income, according to Stephen Gillers, a professor at NYU School of Law. Thomas' omission — which could be interpreted as a violation of that law — could lead to some form of penalty, Gillers said.

"It wasn't a miscalculation; he simply omitted his wife's source of income for six years, which is a rather dramatic omission," Gillers said. "It could not have been an oversight.""

    This is pretty crazy:

NYT | Former Spy With Agenda Operates a Private C.I.A.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/2…

"Mr. Clarridge, 78, who was indicted on charges of lying to Congress in the Iran-contra scandal and later pardoned, is described by those who have worked with him as driven by the conviction that Washington is bloated with bureaucrats and lawyers who impede American troops in fighting adversaries and that leaders are overly reliant on mercurial allies."

"It also shows how the outsourcing of military and intelligence operations has spawned legally murky clandestine operations that can be at cross-purposes with America’s foreign policy goals. Despite Mr. Clarridge’s keen interest in undermining Afghanistan’s ruling family, President Obama’s administration appears resigned to working with President Karzai and his half brother, who is widely suspected of having ties to drug traffickers."

    - - -

Still, associates said, Mr. Clarridge maneuvered against the Karzais last summer by helping promote videos, available on YouTube, purporting to represent the “Voice of Afghan Youth.” The slick videos disparage the president as the “king of Kabul” who regularly takes money from the Iranians, and Ahmed Wali Karzai as the “prince of Kandahar” who “takes the monthly gold from the American intelligence boss” and makes the Americans “his puppet.”

The videos received almost no attention when they were posted on the Internet, but were featured in July on the Fox News Web site in a column by Mr. North, who declined to comment for this article. Writing that he had “stumbled” on the videos on the Internet, he called them a “treasure trove.”

This guy was involved in the Iran-contra scandal with Oliver North, I doubt that North "stumbled" upon these videos.

NYT | Advocacy Group Says Justices May Have Conflict in Campaign Finance Cases
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/2…

"WASHINGTON — When the conservative financier Charles Koch sent out invitations for a political retreat in Palm Springs later this month, he highlighted past appearances at the gathering of “notable leaders” like Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court.

A leading liberal group is now trying to use that connection to argue that Mr. Scalia and Mr. Thomas should disqualify themselves from hearing campaign finance cases because they may be biased toward Mr. Koch, a billionaire who has been a major player in financing conservative causes.

The group, Common Cause, filed a petition with the Justice Department on Wednesday asking it to investigate potential conflicts by Justices Scalia and Thomas and move for their disqualification from the landmark Citizens United case, in which the court last year lifted a ban on corporate spending on political campaigns. Common Cause also cited the role of Mr. Thomas’s wife, Virginia Thomas, in forming a conservative political group opposed to the Obama administration as grounds for his disqualification."

China Bank Moves to Buy U.S. Branches

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB…

China's biggest bank signed an agreement that would make it the first Beijing-controlled financial institution to acquire retail bank branches in the U.S., though regulators could still block the deal.

Under the deal, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., by some measures the world's largest bank, agreed to acquire a majority stake in Bank of East Asia Ltd.'s U.S. subsidiary. ICBC will pay $140 million for an 80% stake. Bank of East Asia, which is a publicly traded company based in Hong Kong, has a total of 13 branches in New York and California. ICBC and Bank of East Asia have talked to U.S. regulators about the deal, these people said.

If ICBC's deal to acquire Bank of East Asia's U.S. subsidiary goes through, Americans could walk into the retail branches, open check and savings accounts and, most significantly for many investors, open yuan accounts to trade the currency.

ICBC, as the bank is known, is based in Beijing and is 70% owned by the Chinese government. It has become increasingly comfortable venturing outside its home markets, which still account for the bulk of its profit.

In China, Hu’s Successor Is Being Quietly Groomed

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/2…

President Hu Jintao of China returned home this weekend after a trip intended to repair relations with the United States. But the next time the White House marches out the honor guard and polishes the crystal for a Chinese leader, it is unlikely to be for Mr. Hu.

Following a secretive succession plan sketched out years ago, Mr. Hu has already begun preparing for his departure from power, passing the baton to his presumed successor, a former provincial leader named Xi Jinping, now China’s vice president. While Mr. Xi is expected next year to formally take the reins in China, the world’s second-largest economy and fastest-modernizing military power, he remains a cipher to most people, even within China.

President Obama has decided not to endorse his deficit commission's recommendation to raise the retirement age, and otherwise reduce Social Security benefits, in Tuesday's State of the Union address, cheering liberals and drawing a stark line between the White House and key Republicans in Congress.

Liberals, who have been alarmed by Obama's recent to shift to the center and his effort to court the nation's business community, applauded the decision, arguing that Social Security cuts are neither necessary to reduce current deficits nor a wise move politically. Polls show that large majorities of Americans in both parties - even in households that identify themselves as part of the tea party movement - oppose cuts to Social Security.

"Most of us would like to see the Democrats remain the strong defenders of Social Security, which they have to be if they want to win the next election," said Roger Hickey, co-director of the liberal Campaign for America's Future.

    ...

Democratic lawmakers, nonetheless, quickly moved to capitalize on the president's decision, scheduling an afternoon news conference to call attention to the man Republicans have chosen to deliver the GOP response to Obama's speech: Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), chairman of the House Budget Committee.

Two years ago, Ryan published a plan to balance the budget titled "A Roadmap for America's Future," which called for deep cuts in both Social Security and Medicare spending. While Republicans as a group have been loath to publicly embrace the details of Ryan's plan, Democrats argue that Ryan's starring role as the voice of the party on fiscal issues suggests that Social Security soon will join non-defense appropriations on the GOP chopping block.

Ryan has said he would like to include entitlement cuts in the budget blueprint House Republicans expect to draft this spring. Pressed to take a position on Ryan's "Roadmap" over the weekend, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) acknowledged on NBC's "Meet the Press" that "the direction in which the 'Roadmap' goes is something we need to embrace."

"The fundamental - the starting point in any plan - has got to be, we need to distinguish between those at or nearing retirement. Anyone 55 and older in this country has got to know that their Social Security benefits will not be addressed - will not be changed," Cantor said. "It is for all of the younger people - those 54 and younger - we're going to have to have a serious discussion."

    • Ok Mr. Cantor, you can eliminate SS if you want, but we're still paying into this system. What's your plan to return our money?IRNlun6

^ That quote from Cantor is such BS, BTW. It's exactly the generation "55 and older" that got us into the budget mess by voting themselves endless tax cuts and spending without paying for it.

You shouldn't be able to pay back your debts by absolving yourself from any responsibility and passing it on to your kids. But of course they don't want to offend old people because this is one group that reliably votes Republican.
