I don't even understand your analogy. I don't even really understand what you're trying to say at all...but I'll guess.. and fuck, I need to work. Why am I so concerned with what people think of my ideology in a god damned message board?!?! haha.

What's to stop anyone from saying 'I hate blacks, mexicans, gays' now? I doubt you'd find many cases of racially motivated HR not hiring minorities now anyways because that's pretty hard to prove. So what's stopping people from doing that now? It might make you feel better that this is a law, but it's a very hard thing to prove. You'd have to know the other candidates, you'd have to know their experience and other intangibles and then you would have to prove motive.

Are you saying what's to stop someone from taking someone's money, cause that would be theft, which is illegal. It's illegal to steal money from a white person, it's illegal to steal money from a black person, a gay person, it's likely illegal to even steal from an illegal alien. Stealing has nothing to do with civil rights.

What my analogy was touching on is the boogeyman of psychology that I believe CR laws create. Yours seems to be dealing with the boogeyman of reality and what could happen if laws were repealed, and none of us know the answer to that. If our end goal is that a majority of people in our society see race as nothing more than a physical characteristic then I'd say we're getting close. Sure you have your out of the closet racists and we can watch youtube videos of them all day long.. but for the people that matter, race is not an important factor any longer. Again, I'm not really for this, just explaining my ideology. I don't fully believe we're ready for something like this, but I do hope that it's day will come where we don't need laws to make us equal, we just are equal. Yeah? Who's with me?!?! Okay work. No seriously, you guys can call me a homophobic redneck dog fucker and I wouldn't know about it.. fire away.

    • I think you have too much faith in humanity. Unjustified faith. Look at Arizona, that's happening NOW.BRNK
    • What's happening in AZ?!? You mean the thing where the Fed law is being enforced?? That thing? The one about ILLEGALmathinc
    • immigrants? That law? The one where everyone has overreacted? Did you read it it? Do you know that there are WAYmathinc
    • more protections against racial profiling than you're being told??mathinc
    • That law has so little to do with race. Everyone has blown that out of proportion. The language is always that it has the 'potential'mathinc
    • for abuse. What law doesn't? There were heavy protections against racial profiling built into that law. The president lied about itmathinc
    • "Reasonable suspicion"DrBombay
    • it the attorney general lied about it. You've been lied to, go read it, it's 10 pages.mathinc
    • See Rick, you still don't know that law. You actually have to be in the act of an unlawful stop before they can even ask you for ANYTHING.mathinc
    • ANYTHING. Just like you and me Rick. We have to be detained before we're asked for ID. Same thing here.mathinc
    • Most likely scenario: You do something illegal while driving, cop pulls you over, asks for ID, if you don't have it.. you're in trouble.mathinc
    • trouble. Just like you and I. Nothing special.mathinc
    • So you have to be driving?DrBombay
    • What about if you are walking down the street?DrBombay
    • You HAVE to be in the act of doing something unlawful. Obamas example about the ice cream shop was wrong.mathinc
    • If you were walking down the street robbing old ladies, then you can be stopped.mathinc
    • How about loitering?DrBombay

    • Rick, what were you saying about anonymous people?mathinc
    • You think this is an insult to me 762? I asked you not to bring my families business into political debate.mathinc
    • Why would you bring up his anonymity? It doesn't bother you, right?DrBombay
    • Do you know Jared Personally?DrBombay
    • It doesn't bother me. You said it bothers you. I'm asking you if you're a hypocrite.mathinc
    • My family isn't involved with Subway. You know jack shit.mathinc
    • Man this takes the cake. I asked both of you to please keep this out of the politics thread. What does this have to domathinc
    • with relevancy to anything we're talking about?? Bullshit.mathinc
    • Explain it to us then...DrBombay
    • good grief...PonyBoy
    • I don't owe you an explanation about anything. This is childish and bullshit. I asked both of you not bring my family into this.. andmathinc
    • you did. Rick I don't talk about your mom. I don't bring up personal shit in here. have some respect.mathinc
    • I am not 762mm, so... I don't know your situation. And have respect for you? Ha. After things you have said? Ha!DrBombay
    • You ran your fucking mouth about the situation about my Mom when I was talking to Kev. So to ask me to leave this out or that out is ridiculous. And again, I didn't bring it up, Jared.DrBombay
    • or that out is ridiculous, Jared.DrBombay
    • No, not respect for me you dumb piece of shit. Have respect for peoples personal lives outside of a pissing contest politics thread.mathinc
    • How the fuck would you feel if I brought up your situations? Right? Fuck man, I'm really pissed. This is total bullshit.mathinc
    • Rick, fuck you. I NEVER talked about your personal life, EVER.mathinc
    • You just did when we were talking about my Mom, you chimed in that this happened and that happened.DrBombay
    • I didn't talk about your mom dipshit, I talked about the argument you and Kev had. Do you even see the difference?? Imathinc
    • talked about things that happened in this thread.mathinc
    • And what did I do, ask about Jared?DrBombay
    • You did what I asked you not to do. I asked you to be respectful about my private life. I have afforded you and everyone else the same respect.mathinc
    • the same respect. It might get heated in here but taking things to that level is wrong, pure and simple.mathinc
    • I didn't realize the sub game was so cloak and dagger.DrBombay
    • And anyway, you DID get involved in a conversation about my personal life, you son of a bitch. So fuck you and your family's business.DrBombay
    • family's business.DrBombay
    • I got involved in a conversation about this fucking thread that had to do with your mom, that I had NO FUCKING part of. So fuckmathinc
    • fuck you Rick. I never got personal with you or your situation. Never did. You're too fucking stupid to realize the godmathinc
    • damned difference between talking ABOUT your mom and talking about a situation INVOLVING your mom. I Fuckingmathinc
    • asked you not to bring up my personal life in this fucking thread and your smug little bitch ass can't resist. You're too fuckingmathinc
    • stupid for your own good. Too fucking stupid. This is a thread about politics. You should keep it that way. I know that you'remathinc
    • way too fucking dumb to debate topics like a normal person, which is why stooping this low is the only course you have left.mathinc
    • Take it easy, Jared. You are making it personal right now you silly bastard and you don't even realize it.DrBombay
    • I don't even know anything about your family business. Really haven't said anything about it either. Why you so angry?DrBombay
    • angry?DrBombay
    • Seems to me you should be attacking this 762 guyDrBombay
  • BRNK0

mathnic- You're dead wrong about race. It's a social construction, not a physical characteristic. Skin color is a physical characteristic, race is not. There is a HUGE difference.

  • ukit0

Tommy, I guess the question is, what's even in the Civil Rights Act. Because there are a few different elements, right?

-Governments must give everyone the right to vote fairly

-Government can't deny people access to publicly funded institutions - i.e., public transport, libraries, city hall etc

-Public schools shouldn't be segregated by race

-Government agencies can't discriminate when they hire people

-Businesses that rely on interstate commerce (hotels, motels, restaurants) can't kick people out based on discrimination

Notice what this doesn't say. It doesn't single out black or white people, or even race. It simply says, governments and public businesses can't turn people away based on ethnicity, gender or religion. People are still free to be as racist as they choose to be in their free time. Private organizations, like the KKK or whatever, are still free to do whatever the hell it is they do.

So what I was trying to say with my analogy is that the present giving example is completely wrong. The government, at the end of the day, works for us and is funded by us...why SHOULDN'T there be a law mandating that it does it's job for everyone? That law really should have been there from the beginning.

The only really debatable part here is that final clause which says businesses engaged in intertstate commerce can't discriminate, and that is the part Rand Paul took issue with, although it doesn't seem like you really made that distinction. And that is the part where I can understand the legal debate against it, although I disagree with it. People would argue that the government really doesn't have the right to mandate businesses comply, based on their authority over interstate commerce. But you guys never brought that up, so I'm guessing that's not the part you take issue with.

The First Golfer brought his duffer’s game to Martha’s Vineyard this week. By Thursday, Mr. Obama had logged three golf games in four days, appearing at one island course after another. He spent five hours on Monday afternoon playing 18 holes at the Farm Neck Golf Club here, two and a half hours on Tuesday playing nine holes at Mink Meadows Golf Club in Vineyard Haven, and several hours playing Thursday afternoon at the Vineyard Golf Club in Edgartown.

While Mr. Obama has indulged in other vacation activities — he took his family bike riding Thursday morning, went to the beach on Wednesday and took his wife to dinner Tuesday night — golf has been the only recurring one.

Previous presidents have honored Memorial Day away from Arlington Cemetery:

1983: Reagan attended summit meeting; Defense Department official Thayer laid wreath at Arlington. Deputy Secretary of Defense W. Paul Thayer laid a wreath at Arlington Cemetery during the Memorial Day ceremony in 1983, according to a May 31, 1983, Washington Post article (retrieved from the Nexis database). The Associated Press reported that President Reagan attended a “summit meeting in Williamsburg, Va., with leaders of the industrialized democracies.”

1992: George H.W. Bush allowed VP Quayle to lay wreath. In 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, according to a May 26, 1992, Boston Globe article (from Nexis). The Globe reported that President George H.W. Bush attended a wreath-laying ceremony and made brief remarks at an American Legion hall in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he also played a round of golf.

2002: George W. Bush spoke at commemoration in Normandy. On May 27, 2002, President George W. Bush spoke at a Memorial Day commemoration in Normandy, France.

David Gergen, appearing with Anderson Cooper on CNN, said, “If our government had fought WWII like the way we’re fighting the oil spill, there’s a good chance many of us would be speaking German today.”

Democratic political strategist James Carville, a resident of Louisiana, slammed President Obama this morning for the "political stupidity" of his response to the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

"The president doesn't get down here in the middle of this... I have no idea of why they didn't seize this thing," Carville said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "I have no idea of why their attitude was so hands off here."

The White House has been on the defensive about its response to the spill, which began when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded on April 20, killing 11 people. Millions of gallons of oil have already spilled into the Gulf, and government agencies are still working with BP to try and cap the leak.

I mean I am sure there are a fleet of US Army Corps of Engineers down there, but isn't it really BP's responsibility to stop it? It is their equipment.
