Dr.B you always seemed like a guy who feels pretty strongly about enviromental issues....can't you see the irony in what they are doing with the cash for clunkers program? As I pointed out on the previous page, they are destroying vehicles that actually run and in return giving people credit to buy new cars. So what if they are more fuel efficient, the fact of the matter is this program is causing more polution with the scrapped vehicles.
And as for the stimulus part..... great more people are buying crappy american cars and helping to slow the epic failure of the auto manufacturers...but the whole plan is short sighted and it seems obvious to me it wasn't really thought out very well as TBO pointed out. What if these shitty "fuel efficient" American cars all break down in a few years....double epic fail? (I may be exagerating but you get my point)
These bandaid fixes are going to do nothing more then slow the gushing blood from the gaping wound for a few miliseconds.

Were you looking for every single problem to be solved in all one move. Can't you see how unrealistic that is?
If you were Obama would you do nothing at all about the recession or the environment? I just don't get it. What would you do?
- zenmasterfoo0
I think the point is, rushing to implement fixes with cash that should be put to better use elsewhere or even better, put aside for a program the functions effectively is what people would hope senior officials in their government would do. I agree, fixes are needed. But this obviously isn't the best of executed plans...some of the same flack Obama and his admin are getting over the stimulus, and health care. Let's engage the right people to think it out and get the right answers for the right money in the right time frame.
- that includes the war time expenditures you mentioned. all of it. all the time.zenmasterfoo
- Could that have been any more ambiguous? So you have no suggestions?DrBombay
- Who are the right people? WHat is the right time frame? What is the right money?DrBombay
- did this program have that figured out? Dude, I'm a designer with opinions - not always answers.zenmasterfoo
- What is the fucking alternative? You type paragraph after paragraph and then cop out.DrBombay
- "I'm just a designer" duh!DrBombay

How about providing incentives for motorists to have their current vehicles maintained for fuel efficiency?...this would also benefit the environment. Seems like much smarter use of federal dollars.
Doing something isn't always better then doing nothing. And when you are going to spend billions of dollars in taxpayer money, every penny spent should have a careful plan and purpose.

- here herezenmasterfoo
- not much you can do to a 1986 bronco 4x4 v8 to make it more fuel efficient. remember those old monte carlos!? mmm...kona
- You mean like when he said to inflate your tires for max fuel efficiency and was berated by the Cro-Mag republicans for it?DrBombay
- great fix. I can say do that. he's got to have better answers. If Bush had said that? same response...zenmasterfoo

are the cars being sent as-is straight to the crushers, then straight to landfills? or are the cars being stripped for parts (engine, alternator, batteries, transmissions, etc...) the tires removed so they can be recycled, all spare metal to be recycled, then whatever is left gets crushed and sent to scrap?
i worked at a junkyard in my early teens and it's a day and a half of work to strip everything off of an old 'junk' car for reuse. off of junk cars yards could make a couple grand back in parts and metal.
if they're just crushing the whole car as-is what a flippin waste.

hey kona found this interesting tidbit on recycling cars:
"recycling cars sends between 3 and 4.5 million tons of shredder residue to landfills every year. This material includes everything from plastic to glass to rubber and can represent as much as 25 percent of the weight of a car that is not recycled."
So assuming they are actually doing the right thing and trying to recycle these cars, there still will be alot of waste leftover. And again consider the fact that people are only turning in cars that run. Sure there are going to be some shit boxes :) but I'm sure there are lots more that with a little work could last for years longer.
I am sure there are plenty of low income people who would love to have some of these cars....I know this to be fact becuase I have donated to charities in the past that do this very thing.- and when the 86 bronco goes to the junkyard in 2 years it will turn into magical fairy dust?DrBombay
- no but that's 2 years you have delayed it...they are making huge strides to recycle more of the automobiles too.designbot
- So in a few years, perhaps there will be much less waste?designbot
- and it will turn to fairy dust YAY j/kDrBombay
- then we would all have flying cars and none of this would matter :)designbot

A lot of the stimulus was money transferred directly to state governments which were on the verge of going broke. Without the stimulus you would have seen what in happening in CA replicated across the country.

That never really gets reported on. States are making their budgets with that money. And while many think that the states should control spending better and they may be right, that ain't paying the check that just came to the table.
- PonyBoy0
what if all state officials took a 5% pay cut?
- never mind... i just read what I wrote and realize the ridiculousness of itPonyBoy

We all argue about the stimulus and shit, which was fucking bupkis, as the financial industry walked away with trillions scott-fucking-free...and all they did to get it was unscrupulously speculate in the market...they lost nothing but had all their losses covered by Joe Taxpayer. And hey, look they're getting bonuses again! Record bonuses! Wow. Imagine that. And they're not loaning any money out, nor are they being any more transparent..and look! They're trying to find more ways to use that cash to continue high leverage speculation in other markets. Meanwhile we sit here and argue about getting some bucks for old cars.
We're fucking suckers. Wake up.

Long Island woman armed to the teeth with an assault rifle and shotgun was arrested Saturday for scouting out and taking pictures of an Air National Guard base.
Her arsenal included an XM-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and 500 rounds of ammunition.
The woman, Nancy Genovese, had been seen at the base a few weeks earlier, taking photos and questioning the guards. This time she had returned to take photos of the perimeter of the base. According to her website, she was worried about "FEMA Camps".
