I think everyone is a conformist to a certain extent because we are probably all influenced by the beliefs of our friends and family and what we experienced growing up. I think that's true for everyone, liberal and conservative!
But that article talks like nonconformity in and of itself is something to be proud of. Isn't a better goal to just support the policies you agree with, whether it's popular or not?

In response to the article on conformity...
I think designers should always try to challenge convention, whether it be liberal or conservative, or everything in-between. I don't think it's appropriate to stifle others' viewpoints, no matter the issue, rather it's important to talk about them. But, I agree with ukit that in the end a person's viewpoints are based on their own inner sense of logic and belief.
