I get it. I realise that I am not the likeliest candidate for this office. I don't fit the typical pedigree, and I haven't spent my career in the halls of Washington.
But I stand before you tonight because all across America something is stirring. What the nay-sayers don't understand is that this election has never been about me. It's been about you.

Still one of my favourite lines from before:
"We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
(I realize who it's inspired from).

- I just added that in there in case some Obama-haters say that the line wasn't his idea.Jaline

there were many excellent speeches at the convention, particularly Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Biden. But I thought Obama was on another plane entirely...

I'm not sure. Still digesting it. The delivery was excellent as always. He got as specific as he could given the type of speech it was. The "A Better Country" phrase was really good and I hope the campaign uses that going forward, as opposed to "change".
I've read through some of the standard right-wing pundits this morning and their attacks are pretty weak against it.
I did think the whole spectacle of the event kinda reinforces the cult of personality thing. I mean I really like the guy and he has my vote, but the pre-speech video montage thing got a bit maudlin for me...

- Oh, I got misty at a few places myself...TheBlueOne
- I appreciated the video bio...helped me grasp him a little better. But I'm a mush that way. :)monkeyshine
- The video thing was pretty irrelevant. Any politician will do that sort of thing. His speech was one for the ages.CyBrain
- He's a great speaker. But I have to agree about being careful...Jaline
- dam i missed the Montage, was the rocky song involved ?BattleAxe

I also liked how he didn't run away from the idea of actually utilizing government for what it is...for nearly thirty years now both parties have run away from the idea of competent government like it had cooties or something...it's an idea that has been missing fro our public discourse for a long time and it's nice to hear it back. Of course the right-wing will label it "socialist" or whatever even though it's not.

Eight is enough.
- Thank you.digdre
- i thought 4 was plenty
lackofcolor - I thought he lost the popular vote, was instated improperly by the Supreme Court and stole votes with his brother along the wayCyBrain

The speech was good, but Obama is far from his best when he's attacking McCain. It's not what he does best, and it makes him sound like he's part of the old Washington system, something he is trying so much to show he isn't part of. Granted he needed to do that to make his case clear to us Americans, but, you know.
In the second part of his speech, ohboy was he on fire. Fantastic ending.
As for the 'cult personality', I think you're missing the point of these events. These conventions are huge publicity stunts, and to attempt to call out Obama on it is like the pot calling the kettle black. All Obama did is out do anything McCain could have ever pulled off, and more power to him for it.
- That's gonna be Biden's jobflashbender
- He ripped McCain so pointedly I loved it. "We all put country first"Soler

I still don't understand why people get so worked up over voting for a President. Do you guys get this crazy when there's an election for your city council, mayor, or governor?
I just don't get all of the excitement over someone that's going to have a minimal effect on your life.
- sintaxera0
i wouldnt include Iraq, banking crisis, housing crisis & a shitty economy on my list of things that have minimal affects on my life

"the change we need doesn't come from Washington. Change comes to Washington." good line
