my employer normally only does that with sales people.

I had the same shit happen last thursday. Really the boss only fucked himself since 3 projects are completely blown for them now.
Like others have said - you're better off

I could be wrong, but I think that giving your notice in essence creates a contract... if they ask you to leave immediately they would be obligated to pay-out the term of the contract (2 weeks)... otherwise it's an involuntary termination and they would have to prove cause.
If that's not the case, why would ANYBODY give notice?

i put in a one week notice on monday. but for some reason, my boss thinks my last day is september 1st, even though i clearly stated that i could only give a weeks notice.

My co-worker gave his 2-week notice, and after 3 days my boss told him that she was letting him go right away, BUT- he was still paid for the 12 remaining days of his 2 weeks notice.
You should have told your're boss that if you didn't get paid for the 2 weeks you would have to apply for unemployment.
Also, you can probably call your new job and tell them you are available sooner, because your company did not accept your 2 weeks notice.

Are you not getting paid for your notice period or did the boss simply not want you to come in knowing that you might not be fully focussed on the job in hand while you work out your notice.
Just sounds like you've been put on gardening leave which of course is brilliant as it's just paid holiday.

Do you not get gardening leave?

Same thing happened to me I gave a months notice a week later, boss came in and said yeah you can just go, I got full pay etc. and a month holiday woo hoo!! :D I had worked with the guy for 7 years, didn't even get a leaving do or fuck all.

My old CD quit and had to give 3 months notice – he was asked to leave straight away – safe to say he got fat in the Garden...

When I quit my last job I gace one months notice, my boss wanted 6 weeks notice. I ended up doing 5 weeks, I was there for 3.5 years and though I just wanted to get out I didn't want to piss away a good reference. He also didn't want me to tell anyone I was leaving until the day before. I told everyone after I'd told him (straight after, no hesitation) and told em all to act surprised when the boss told em.

Also, there were a few people who left while I was working there (over the years about 14 people by my last count) and of those i only knew of 2 or 3 who were leaving before their last day. Whats the deal with that?

You were at RED? This is how RED treat their employees? Always thought it would be a cool place to work.

If you have vacation days left, you have to get paid for those by law.
