i would assume that would be plenty for a security deposit on an apt. in any city.
as far as a down pay payment on a condo or house, it's a bit weak but it's a buyers market you may be able to work out a nice mortgage

in all seriousness, if you're taking an apartment, you'll have to pay first and last, probably a deposit (half or full month's rent) and half rent to the realtor... Unless you're moving to like idaho, that'll be most of your 5K.
