For a US employer? 1 is preferred.
But if you've been in the game for a while 2 is acceptable.
I use two pages split between employed work and freelance work

Depends on the level of position. Higher and 'executive' level types don't have 1 page resumes. I've seen some closer to 10 pages.
Tailor it to the position.

You misspelled 'portfolio', and it it should be several pages.
Résumés are for secretaries.

Just print your url on the 1 page as big as will fit. Visible from across the room.

is it really necessary to have more than 1 page?
- skelly_b0
1 page. Only exception being someone with so much rock solid experience they can fill two pages with the goods. This usually only applies to academic types applying for work in the academic world.

agree with wordsinyourmouth and skelly_b
Even with a work history at, say, more than 5 companies
just skip the details of the older ones. No one cares. Name, position, time there...

1 or 2 pages. Page 1 is the cover letter with a possible short bio.
Page 2 lists your experience.
