that isn't true at all. i've managed to teach myself a bit of design without having to sacrafice the rest of my life.
you should aim for designing flash sites to start with, they let anyone do that.

"designing flash sites"... I would say start with the basics. Some history & grid systems. I know it's more fun to do flash sites, but the history will help determine if you're really interested in design... or just want to make cool flashy stuff.
