This guy has it spot on, I hear this problem all the time.
Especially now the new imacs have that stupid glossy monitor, there is no middle machine for professionals.
I know its an old rant but still valid in my opinion, and this guy hits the nail on the head

that was too long to read, but I do think the glossy monitor should be optional ONLY. There are professionals that just glare and reflections disturbing when working on the computer.

Steve is too busy trying to make the mac360 :(

it's worth reading - clearly puts together the points - and saves money.
when i assemled my current video workstation (in 2005) i was already looking for non-mac alternatives. for a lack of technical detail knowledge in the end i didn't risk to switch (conservatively - after about 15 mac years). i'm satisfied with my equipment, upgraded ram and drives and stuff works fine. but it really was so stupid expensive i don't want to think about it. next time i will definetly take this gif as a reference. and i won't miss osx either.
- do any of these purchases have anything to do with the price of a computer?ovsm
- the subtotal is less than a video fit macpro would cost.invisiblechamber
- and includes an HD cam and tripod.monNom

I'm a big fan of os x and find it tiresome working in windows..
I'm currently on a white imac with 3gb ram and it has been great, but i'd quite like to get a new imac but don't want to risk the glossy screen.
I totally understand why Jobs has the glossy screen on the imac and its a fucker, I simply won't spend the extra money on a macpro though as I don't need all that power

I like my iMac alu glossy screen of 24 inches, but like Jaline, I'm not a designer just a developer), sunlight doesn't affect the room it is in either.
- gosche0
mac is mainstream now! they dont care about the pros anymore ;)
- moth0
Why whine about their limited product range? There's a whole world of computer hardware out there.

the answer is simple:

i have a 24" imac and i love the glossy screen, i really don't see what the fuss is all about. i work with print most of the time too - it really makes the color truer if you're working with coated.

I had massive problems with my eyes working on a glossy screen, started with just a stinging but ended up with my vision going blurry. Switched back and noticed the difference immediately, my eyes are still a bit out though.
I think it was problem with the various sources of light, reflected and monitor generated. I would often have outside light and building lights moving both showing in my monitor, this would alter as people moved through them.

I have a 15" Macbook Pro w/ glossy. Sometimes I regret purchasing it, but when I'm in a low-light environment it really kicks ass due to the higher level of contrast. If I were a print designer though, I would be telling you how frustrating working with it is.

sorry but steve is busy trading handjobs with jony ive

the worst thing is that you can buy glossy stickers that fit your screen perfectly and don't leave residue if removed.
If for some reason I would prefer glare on my screen, what would be my choice, so when I need to do work I can remove it.
Unfortunately I think apple is going to start making all their new computers with glare screens only.
- It's not a "glare" screen. I have never had problems. Maybe stop using it outside or near windows?Jaline
- I can see their point. My loft has huge windows facing West which makes sitting on my couch w/ laptop nearly impossibleSeanbot
- impossible.Seanbot
- But it's nice to eat Doritos and work at the same time while watching TV. Feel me?Seanbot
- I know it's a problem, but there are uses for the glossy screen too. The colours look great.Jaline
- ...they may not be entirely the way the designer wanted you to see them, but they are great ;)Jaline

Is an Imac supposed to be pro? Buy whatever display you want for a Mac Pro.
- isigh*avolve
- the imac price and specs are right on but the glossy screen kills it. mac pro is 2x price.cramdesign

If you find a better computer, buy it.

Feel free to pelt me with rotten fruit and a full range of swear words in many languages, but as someone who has been a designer/coder/video/3d/animatio... type guy for 7/8 years, I have always had PC, hated win 98, upped to XP a long long time ago, and seriously I don't have any complaints. My system never crashes, I can just plug my equipment - such as it is, straight in, and never have any problems...I never shout at my machine anymore for being slow (other than knowing I should always have more ram) - to be honest I've used XP for so long that - and I believe this is the aim of all operating systems - I just don't notice it at all....
What benefits could I seriously expect from using OSX, which I hear everybody rave about, but have never been brave enough to just ask 'why ?'. So, Ms Jaline, and many others - why should I switch if, maybe I've got 2k coming up for an equipment spending spree ?- expose alone is worth itdoesnotexist
- i prefer mac but if you are happy with xp... i wouldn't switch. neither is better... it is a preference thing...cramdesign
- yea its a preference thing for sure, i love the way os x works, i'm used to and i'm happy with it. each to thier own thoughavolve
- PCs are just wack. Plain and simple.Reserves

meh...
Switch – don’t switch. Eat – don’t eat. Get a haircut – don’t get a haircut.
It’s 2008, ffs. This argument is about to celebrate it’s silver anniversary, and it feels MUCH older.
Now, Pens vs. Wings – there’s an argument (apparently).

I must say what I always say: it's a real sign o' the times that people now complain about glossy monitors.
Was it not but maybe 2-4 years ago that designers were still swearing off LCD monitors to use behemoth and often glossy CRT monitors, and BECAUSE glossy was better for perfect color?
Anyways, I don't like them myself and have a regular non-glossy LCD. It's the standard that we design for now, don't you think?
I would love to see a percentage of average audience that is on LCD's now.
- i'm not too worried about colours rather the glare in non-perfect lighting and its not so easy on the eyes (my eyes)avolve
