can't you guys believe in your religion quietly without having to try to prove it to other people?I mean it's faith that is what it is about, right? not trying to prove it wrong.

Anyone who brings up evolution in a debate about religion brings a sewing machine to a game of cat's cradle. On either side of the debate.
Evolution is real so your gods are false/evolution is false so my gods are real? Doesn't follow, chum.

I think there's 2 things going on here though. There's "made everything" god who was properly described (IMO) in Thomas Payne's 'The Age of Reason' which is a fantastic read if you have half an hour (its short). And then there's the "god cares what we do and will kill you and your family if you eat a pig" god. Who is very well described by any given religion's psychotic fundamentalists.
I think Einstein probably had some notion of the former but , as is evidenced by the article, none of the latter.

Why is everyone's God better then the other?
Muslims vs. Christians, Jews vs. Christians, Muslims vs. Buddhist, etc... That is why I fucking hate all religions. All we need as individuals is faith and hope, not a well branded form of religion!

what i don't like about most western religions is the promise for a better after life. As if people weren't satisfied with the life their god provided them in the first place, it's like a slap in the face. If someone believes in "god" they should be happy with the life they have and not expect any more while living it to the fullest. After all, who the hell are we to think we deserve anything more than the life we live already. in the grand scheme of things, we are little micro pieces of shit who mean nothing and contribute nothing.
my 2c, not coming back to this thread because religious debates are pointless.
again, thanks Calles for the read.

dobs et al, I can say at least for myself that I was merely responding to a request for input from several people. As far as arguments for God's existence, they can be made to a certain extent from human reason. At a certain untestable level, faith comes in, compelling one to swing one way or another on the metaphysical pendulum of deity.
Regarding the character of God, he has done a sufficient job of providing those claims. It's all very clearly laid out in Scripture. It is modern man who has maligned his character and has bought pop psychology and philosophy about who God is. We can't fathom everything about him, but everything we need is there. When I argue from a biblical standpoint, I am not presenting views cooked up by myself or another person; these are God's ideas. In light of Scripture, any man-made argument is weak, ill-formed and blinded by the narrow scope of human reason. Thus, for those who do not believe, the arguments presented by men and women of faith seem downright silly, even childish. I understand Eistein, even if I don't agree with him.

yeah on like every forum there's a religious debate like every month. i'd like to see someone spice it up, most are based on some random anti-religion dawkinite peice of editorial super market trash or quotes from some scientist... that or jihadwatch.org

dobs, would you prefer that I refrain from answering your questions? If that's what you guys really want, then I'll stay out of these discussions in the future.
I agree with some of the statements made by a few of you that fundamentalism has left a stain on the world. The current Western Christian brand began in the mid-20th century, largely as a response to theological liberalism. The fundies collectively abandoned the poor and the needy, believing that Godliness = separatism. We are still collectively reeling from that blow, and I take it many of you have primarily experience Christianity through the jackhammer rhetoric of fundamentalists. Thankfully, these Falwell types don't bear any resemblance to Christ.
- what question? this shit is pointless and you know it. my opinion won't change yours won't either and calles will make fun of all of us. sounds fun.mrdobolina
